Indeed.

And this ploy has carried over to the Internet-- Webkins.

These are stuffed animals that kids ‘adopt’ and register on a website (Webkins World), and they virtually build a whole universe (and play games, etc.) as well as play with the stuffed animals.

I don’t know if there’s an accompanying cartoon (we don’t have a streaming TV in the house), but I wouldn’t be surprised.

I think this strategy reached it’s perfection with Pokeman. They cut out all of the drama and character development and focused on selling toys. The song is pretty much says “Go buy all of our toys!” and the plot revolved around a kid going out to collect all of the pokeman. There were a few bad guys, but they were only trying to collect them all too, and were just too lazy to do it themselves.

Pure fucking genius.
