This quote is great for all the hypocrite Evangelist-type friends I know that are all talk and no walk – it’s like converting is the new thing to do just for fun these days. This quote reminds people about false piety and trying to be a Christian just so you can say that you’re a Christian.

Matthew 6:1-8

1: "Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2: "Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
3: But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4: so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
5: "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
6: But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
7: "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
8: Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

I have tons of respect for people that are actually religious (I’m not), and I think this quote reinforces the fact that the most impressive people are not the ones who have to remind you every five seconds that they are Christian, but the ones that don’t have to say anything – the ones whose actions tell you that they are devout.

I do realize that this quote is meant to be directed at the supposed hypocrisy of Jews, but I think it is relevant nonetheless.[/quote]

AgentOrange,

What you have mentioned is true, hypocrisy is ugly and unfortunately a lot of people do claim to be Christian and yet their lives do not back up this claim in any form whatsoever. And I also agree that the people who don’t shout every five seconds that they are Christian but instead actually live out their faith are actually living more in accordance with how God wants them to live.

However I would like to clear something up from what you mentioned in your comments above. You said that you admired the Christians who don’t say anything, however i would like to mention that even the most humble and “quiet” Christian will take any opportunity to speak about their faith to non-christians (i.e. evangelise), because just as you have shown many verses that call for christians to be humble, there are just as many verses speaking about the need to evangelise others.

If I’ve misunderstood what you were saying above please let me know, I just wanted to clarify that evangelsim is a natural part of a Christian’s faith and should be expected, however the way that the evangelism is done can make a huge difference to how it is received.

Cheers,

Ben

Add it to the pile:

Romans 8:38,39

38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ahh the hope of glory in Christ Jesus.

Depends on what you mean by “real.” I think they in some ways reflect the original bible verses, but most of them are really mangled as a result of crappy translations. And several of them only look strange because they are out of context.

But yea, there’s some really weird crap in the bible.

Anything is possible…any perimeters you (i.e. you, your parents/family, society, religion, philosophy, ideas, thoughts, morals, values and/or lack thereof) choose may designate your limitations, boundaries, what you believe, how you believe, how you react, what you consider good, evil, paradise, hell or also perhaps the lack of any of the above.

I always wondered why I spent most of my free time bombing orpahages, stealing pensions, and egging on global warming.

I also think 2 Timothy says, “Everything is permitted. Not everything is beneficial”.

Nate: there’s a verse that you need to know. It comes from the long-lost Dead Lay Scrolls.

“And thou shalt not eat of the private parts of a woman: this is an abomination in the eyes of the LORD. Whosoever eateth thus shall not enter the tabernacle, but shall be flogged with sticks until cleansed by a priest.”

Clitoronomy 8:69

Naaaaaah, just kiddin’. Go check out Song of Solomon if you want to hear some motivating passages from a champion pussy-eater.

Hey, Merry Christianity, Nate. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

But the fruit of the spirit is LOVE,JOY,PEACE,PATIENCE,KINDNESS,GOODNESS,FAITFULNESS,GENTLENESS and SELFCONTROL. Against such things there is no law.

Good one.

Great ones so far (only referring to the “real” ones of course).

Here are some of my favorites:

Acts 18:6 (NKJ version)

"But when they opposed him and blasphemed, he shook his garments and said to them, “Your blood be upon your OWN heads; I AM clean. From now on, I will go to the Gentiles.”

The “OWN” and “AM” were italicized, but I don’t know how to do it here so I capitalized it.

Acts 13:53 (NJK)

“But they shook off the dust from their feet against them…”

I feel this is a great way to look at when we have difficulties…to “shake the dust off”

Proverbs 23:13-14 (NKJ)

“Do not withhold correction from a child,
For if you beat him with a rod, he will not die.
You shall beat him with a rod, and deliver his soul from hell.”

Proverbs 27:17 (NKJ)

“As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.”

2Kings 9-12 (NKJ) more of a story than a fav verse.

“Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty with his fifty men. So he went up to him; and there he was” (speaking of Elijiah)"sitting on top of a hill And he spoke to him: “Man of God, the king has said ‘Come down’!”

"So Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, "If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men.’ And fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.

Then he sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty men. And he answered and said to him: 'Man of God, thus has the king said, “Come down quickly.”

So Elijah answered and said to them: ‘If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men.’ And the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty."

You know, I notice that my favorite verses/stories revolve around how I feel on a particular day…No nonsense today!

I used to have favrotie Bible verses, but with all of the studying I have done over the last few years on understanding the BIble I have kind of ceased with having a favorite verse.

Instead I have a great appreciation for the entire text.

I liken it to the movie Amadeus

Mozart’s rival looks at one of his symphonies, and is shocked by how complex, and fragile the symphony is.

He basically said that each note hung upon the previous one, and if one is missing the entire piece is incomplete.

That is how I feel about the Bible these days.

Cool thread. I was just thinking about starting one of these today.

There are so many favorites! Here are some verses I have been trying to memorize lately:

Romans 5:5 God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

John 15:4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

Mark 1:35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

Philippians 3:12 I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.
13- . . . One thing I do : Forgetting what is behind & straining toward what is ahead,
14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Luke 10:2"The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Titus 2:(11) For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. (12) It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, (13) while we wait for the blessed hope–the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, (14) who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

I agree…Many current trends in “Evangelism” by many Christians and denominations are also not Christ-like. This is also a huge reason why people are so “turned off” by religion when in reality it’s not about “religion” at all. It’s about a relationship.

HAHA! I knew there had to be a reason that it’s been so HOT here in Florida recently!

it’s late but thank you very much for the encouragement. it’s been a trying week for me. a christian girl i’ve been dating a while didn’t feel as i did about our relationship and it has really shook me to the core. i’ve been reevaluating my relationship with the Father for the past few days trying to put Him first. it’s funny, you hear all your life that if you seek God, everything else will fall into place, but how hard it is to truly seek God, especially in a relationship. as i’m piecing myself together through prayer i am hoping to be satisfied with singleness and try to understand why things turned out the way they have and just trust that the Father has my best interests in life. it’s funny how we think having a companion will make life better but if our life isn’t in order and our plans for our future collapse our insecurities become revealed and our foundation collapses. like a lot of guys, i thought girlfriends were a status and singleness meant something was wrong with me when i wasn’t dating. now i’m getting on track with college and trying to decide about vet school and what i want to do with the rest of my life, which is more important than a temporary relationship right now. so i have another verse to add to the mix.

“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.”

Ephesians 3:15-19

Another one:

Hebrews 12:7 (NIV version)

“Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?”

Thanks everybody so far for sharing some of there verses with me and evrybody else here at T-Nation. Heres another verse I like:

(KJV) 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

I aslo like the book of JOB. Its a very good inspirational story.

stay strong,

I mostly just appreciate. I have some basic talent but never carried it far.

I have some friends that are great musicians so that helps keep me in the know on some things.

What instrument do you play?

No, Harris, I’m not obsessed. I think you’re FUN. You say outrageous things and make me laugh. Is that bad, for some reason?

When you say stuff like, ‘Bush should be put on trial at the Hague.’ it cracks me up! When you say that Bush blew up the levees and wanted all black people to die (I THINK you said that – sorry if not), that’s funny stuff.

I like outrageous psychos like myself. What’s wrong with that?
