Fat Guy in a Little Coat- Powerlifting Log

Meat, proud to read your thread. You will find the right time. I disagree with trying to give it without him knowing it came from you. Watching you in that gym motivates the shit out of him. A belt from you will be a badge of honor for him for a long time. You’re doing this out of compassion and for all the right reasons. Pull him aside and give it to him. I’m glad i won’t be there, old phat people look funny teared up. Rock on,from the Missouri Mule.

you hit the nail on the head there buddy. That’s what i will do.

thanks brother.

Hi Meat,

I’ve given a couple of belts away to people I thought had potential and heart. I just say: Hey I’ve got this belt that doesn’t fit me. Ya want it? They usually try to refuse or pay me for it. I just tell them I can’t use it. Put it to good use.

None of these guys have disappointed me.

Rick.

ME bench- i told myself that i was going to take this week off from benching and only do machines to fully let the chest heal. well… i couldn’t do it. the good news is that the chest is definitely healing and i know exactly what weight to stop at before i pull it again. my plan is to slowly add weight to the flat bench each week until i’m back up where i was before. this will allow me to fully heal while still getting my work done.

flat bench-long pause on chest

0x10
135x10
225x6
315x4
365x2
405x2
425x1x3-the weight was light but i could feel a slight pulling between those ribs so i shut it down. next week i’ll up it to 430 and do 3 singles again. my second ME will be a heavy partial movement but i will always start with paused bench to track my healing.

Hammer strength incline machine-damn, this machine makes me feel all strong and shit.

2plates x 4 long pause
4plates x 4 " "
6plates x 4 " "
8plates x 4 " "
10plates x 4 " "
12plates x 4 " "-this was all the weight i could get on this thing. when i released it after the set, the damn thing almost feel over backwards. none of these machines are bolted to the floor.

dips
BW x 10
BW +45lb x 10
BW +90lb x 10
BW +135lb x 10

BW x 15 x 3- paused for two count on each rep and each set performed as soon as my training partner was done.

the ol’ triceps are fried.

I really don’t know why

I told you there wouldn’t be enough room on the loading sleeves for you. Ha!

Glad you’re staying healthy.

Yeah, this is a better idea Barry.

And Meat… stop breakin’ the gym equipment!

I like how your treating the HS machine like a leg press

sound like your healing up well

felt great today. i think the chest is fully healed but i’m going to stay the course and just keep adding weight each week in small increments until i’m back where i was.

i was VERY tempeted to make a huge jump on box squats tonight but i wised up and realized that i only worked up to 455 last time. so i stopped at 495. i videoed one of my singles at 495 to check for form issues. i think it looks pretty good. i also videoed my zerchers off the pins. i like to do them to work getting the hips through.

paused box squats
0x10
135x10
225x6
315x4
405x2
495x1x3

zerchers off pins
135x4
225x4
315x4
365x2x3

standing calf raises
stack x 8x5

short and sweet. feeling really good about my training.

Lookin’ good.

You’re the only guy I know of that thinks of 40 lbs as a “small increment.”

thanks skid.

it’s small when i SHOULD be box squatting close 700 instead of 495 right now.

I’ve got to find me one of those and start using it. I want to at least feel strong if I can’t be strong.

Zerchers looked good-
Its smart to be conservitive when your banged up…

Meat I did not know you wrestled-
I did in college- I was tiny- 130
nothing says unwell in the head like a 12 pound cut 2x a week

Nice session. I like the setup for the Zsquats. I noticed that with those you power the weight up but don’t control it so much on the eccentric. Do you always do them like that?

the eccentric is useless. i’m doing these to improve the lockout on my deads. just like the eccentric on deads is useless and can lead to an injury. overly controlling the eccentric on these and deads are just wasting your energy you can be using for the actual lift.

Another nugget of info…hmmm, I have a question then: Would it be better just to drop the weight on the deads and not do the eccentric?

i just control it down by keeping my hands on it. no need to do a slow, controlled eccentric though.

things are really progressing well. i’m very excited about our training. everything feels really good. no aches or pains…knock on wood.

i decided to put elevated deads back into the rotation but with one big difference. I’m doing them conventional. this allows me to still get some hips and quads into it, keeping it from being all lower back. i set the elevation right at my sticking point.

i worked up to 635 and it was a real grinder. not having the momentum off the floor made this pull a very slow one as you will see from the vid.

elevated deads-set at approx. 3/4’s up the shin.

505x1+10lbs from last week. i was very fatigued by this time. i did my best to keep my hips down but as you will see from the vid, they came up and the weight got in front of me. i stayed with it and got my hips through. this is what i preach to the guys at my gym- when the bar slows down, you have to be patient and fight the urge to hitch or ramp the weight.

I loved the Zerchers.

Here’s a question for you - Do you ever do too much? Is there such a thing? I watch you box squat and do zerchers and a ton of cool stuff that I want to do in addition to what I’m already doing but have been repeatedly cautioned against it.

you can definitely do too much. you may have noticed how short my sessions are. i don’t believe in killing yourself at the gym. especially if you’ve been at it for awhile. i would add stuff.

i would rotate things in. i typically stick with the main movements for 4 weeks and the change everything up. accessory stuff can be changed weekly. i like four weeks because it gives me time to see improvement.

high volume and strength don’t mix for me.

if you ever have questions about movement selection, let me know.
