Fat Guy in a Little Coat- Powerlifting Log

I’m gonna start the brain pickin. Can we assume if your doing something it’s either to directly or indirectly help your powerlifting? You’re doing some stuff I’ve never thought of as powerlifting associated,eg, pec dec. Always considered this a bodybuiding exercise. You find it helps the bench?

i do quite a bit of hypertrophy training- a big muscle is a stronger muscle. since i’m training for a push/pull meet at the end of feb., my squat day has become mostly hypertrophy training. the quads get neglected when doing a lot of powerlifting style squatting.

i’ve also found that the higher rep work with moderate weight helps me recover from the heavy low reps associated with ME work.

so in a round about way it helps my powerlifting. the pec dec doesn’t directly increase my bench but the added mass and higher reps associated with the movement does.

I also believe in trying to keep all the muscle groups strong. if i were to just train for the big three lifts i would be neglecting some areas. i feel that keep everything strong also helps to prevent injuries and increases my form and strength on the big three.

Makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

ME bench- pretty low volume tonight. arm and shoulder are still a little tweaked but nothing i can’t work around. all in all a pretty damn good night.

bench-full ROM touch and go
0x10
135x10
225x10
315x6
405x1
505x1-set up was a little off but i muscled up the weight.

floor press-legs straight, no arch and paused
455x2-felt the forearm a bit on this one

that’s it… not a lot of volume but definitely got some work done.

140’s x 2 = 280 for 12 reps. I was doing doubles with 285 this week. Granted it was 75% of my 1RM, I think I might as well just sulk.

Great job my man. Who needs a lot of volume when training is that intense.

I really like the way you train. A few sets with a few exercises but very intense.

thanks!!

i find that i’m able to put forth a ton of intensity and effort into my working sets. I can actually push myself right to the point where i could easily tear a muscle. i’ve learn, for the most part, where that point is. the only time you will see volume in my training is if i’m working for hypertrophy or speed and that’s always with a moderate weight.

I think that is one of the advantages of being a “seasoned” lifter as most of us over here are. I chuckle when i read where these newbies are talking about the ton of volume that they do or that they don’t believe in overtraining or the need for deload weeks. they’ve obviously never trained at a high level with heavy weight for very long or at all.

Do you feel its better to deadlift every week or every other? Or alternate different exercises like rack pulls instead of deads sometimes.

careful, meat, you might get all big.

i guess it depends on what i’m training for. right now i’m training for push/pull so i’m deadlifting every week and it’s working well. if i’m training for a full meet i rotate each week between Squat/Deadlift as an ME.

i do mostly deadlift and squat variations though. i don’t do a lot of full ROM squatting and deadlift for heavy singles. if i do full ROM it’s usually for reps. doing full ROM heavy really wears me down.

Nice to have you here Meat. This log is definitely a 'must-follow".

Glad to see this log. You are an inspiration to a newb who has a long, long way to go before he can lift even half of what you lift, but who has a short journey before he reaches the over 35 crowd. Thanks.

Meat - yer givin away all the secretz™,
dood!

Hey, who let the children in?
Old Lardass

i’ve been a bit under the weather this week so i decided to take it easy tonight.

sumo pull- touch and go
135x6
225x6
315x4
405x2
495x1
585x4- these were pretty light and i was definitely good for a few more reps

rack pulls right at knee- i did one set of these. i attempted conventional but my lower back didn’t feel quit right so i stopped there.

605x3

GHR’s
25lb plate x 10x3

incline situps
BW x 12x3

not a ton of work but the deadlift is getting stronger

“I’ve been a bit under the weather this week, so I decided to take it easy tonight”…605x3…that’s a classic line sir. I only wish I had that fancy youtube to get the vids. Thanks for letting me(us) in on it, I though Skid and Eco ect. were scary! I’ll go sit in the corner now. Z-man

Awesome lifting! Been looking over your thread and vids. Gonna try the alternating ME Squats/Deadlifts.Nice pull and it looks like you have plenty left too! Jimmy T

Damn… here I am fashionably late to the party again!

Everybody… this man was introduced to me by Skid (via internet) a few months ago (July 2008 to be exact). He has been an invaluable, patient, inspirational and the driving force behind my (and many others) training.

I was at a crossroads in my life, and was trying to decide what to do and where to go with my training.

Meat grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and said… “Dude, go ye forth and lifteth heavy shite”. There was angels with trumpets blaring, small furry animals applauding and cavorting around my feet, dogs and cats sleeping together and this ray of sun poked through the clouds and warmed my genitals.

With the help, advice and guidance from Meat and a few others, and with out going into specifics… and bustin’ my ass… in the last 7 months I have gained over 100 pounds on my deadlift, 30 pounds on my bench and 75 pounds on my squat. I have also made arrangements to enter my first push/ pull meet at his urging.

Ladies and gentlemen… I give you… MEAT!!

Now c’mere and give me a hug you little T-Rex dood!
