Waiting til it’s time to go to the college for Friday night torture so as I read this thread I had one of those moments we must all have at one time or another on here. You read something you really can’t relate to.
Though we share lifting in common we all come from diverse backgrounds. (What the hell’s he going on about, now?) Lay offs. 30 years military and now post office. I’ve never had to worry about not having a job or losing one.
I’ve had to discipline troops and even had to kick some out but I’ve never had to really tell someone “sorry, no more job” or had to worry about someone saying it to me. Guess it makes me feel kind of naive.
My respect just went up for you people who have to worry about job security and still keep working out. Ok, end of really weird post.
Weirdo.
I’ve had to recommend some one be let go (they really weren’t working out) and I’ve been fired myself after a nightmare two months of increasing demands for better job performance and scathing, unjustified criticism of my job performance.
The manager was actually trying to get me to quit by overworking me and criticizing everything I was doing. He wanted to consolidate my position into that of two other workers. I managed the increased workload and he finally decided to fire me for “not having the proper attitude.”
I worked graveyard alone, so I’m not certain who I was disturbing - all my communications were professional and I was always polite to my manager when he came in as I was leaving. His viewpoint might be different, he may have been telling the truth from his perspective…but it sure was uncomfortable at the time.
I’m truly glad that you don’t have to worry about those things. It certainly makes it easier to be a decent human being to others…something this world needs more of.
T’ain’t fair out here sometimes, but what are ya gonna do?[/quote]
Hel and Skid, I really appreciate your perspective. This was a trying and stressful time for me. You see I have been at this place for 20 years. In all that time I have had to fire a bunch, I have had swings taken at me, knives pulled on me, the sheriff came out and escorted me around for a day because a former employee was supposedly coming down to “shoot my ass”.
Everyone I let go was because of “just causes”. This was a first for me because we just didn’t have the work. We didn’t need the extra maintenance man, the part time machine operators, or the forklift driver. It was hard, because I always pride myself in getting more out of less. I have been able to maximize people’s strong points and limit exposure of their weak points. This time the economy was greater than my ability.
