Farmer's Log 2

Solid work. Agree on the warm up and how important it is. You’ll always be young to us.

Thanks for saying so Joe, but I am so much weaker than I was 2 years ago and feel like a bit of a charlatan mixing with you guys and your big weights.

I know that’s your polite way of asking for a pic of my toilet, so here you are.

James - Thanks. I turned 44 three days ago and hadn’t shaved for 3 weeks, I was shocked how grey my beard was. I thought I looked pretty distinguished, like a thin Grizzly Adams. My wife said I looked like a hobo.

I remember way back reading something about Ben Johnson doing a set of 3 heavy squats before a race so he felt really light when running. I liked the concept so thought I’d try some heavy high pulls first to make my snatch feel lighter. It was a complete failure. I couldn’t get under any of them. Must have been the steroids.

My hams are so sore today from the Dimel deads. Nice!

No indoor plumbing??? Brett, please. There’s a limit to roughing it.

LOL. We hope to have hot and cold water and a shower in the house by the winter, but when you have a finite amount of water (we have two 7 metre wells) you just can’t justify flushing 10 litres away every time you take a dump, so the sawdust toilet will have to stay.

I don’t want to come across as some crusty, soap dodging hippie trying to save the planet (those self righteous “I’m saving the planet by recycling my yoghurt pots” people annoy me), it just happens that we are more than a kilometre from the nearest electricity supply and it would cost a 1000 Euros per 100 metres to get connected, so solar was an obvious choice.

Saying that, I do think a bit of hardship does us good, it makes you appreciate things when you finally get them. For example I wired up a bedside lamp today so we wont have to get in and out of bed and a mosquito net by torchlight anymore. I am excited about that. Little things please little minds eh?

Friday June 7th

Hangsnatch
1 x 4 x 88 lbs

Power snatch
8 x singles x 132 lbs

Push press
1 x 5 x 154 lbs
2 x 4 x 154 lbs

Front squat

1 x miss x 264 lbs

3 x 8 x 154 lbs

Pendlay rows
3 x 9 x 154 lbs

Natural GHR
2 x 8 x bw

Push ups
1 x 15 x bw +44 lbs
1 x 11 x bw +44 lbs

EZ curls
1 x 12 x 70 lbs
1 x 7 x 70 lbs

YTWs
10 reps of each move x 2 sets

Finally got a bit of zip on the snatches. It was just a technical issue. Once I stopped over-thunking it, I got the hang of them and got better with each rep.

Got stuck in the hole with the 264 front squat, but I think 242 is the most I’ve front squatted with a clean grip.

Getting back in the swing of things. Feels great to be lifting again.

Life is good.

Good lifting.

I grew up on a place with a cistern for water. Worked fine as long as it rained, but when dry, had to have a guy drive out with a water truck. We had indoor toilet, but didn’t want to know where it went.

You’re right, it makes you appreciate the little things.

Null - It was a hard day lugging all the batteries around for sure, but not quite as stressful as connecting them all together, because there is no way to turn them off, the whole system is live while you work on it. You don’t want to drop your spanner across both terminals with 14 batteries worth of amps there trust me. [/quote]

That would make for a rather short day… Any way to install switches between, so you can isolate?

What are your particulars? Square meters of panels? Just how much would 14 batteries store? Biggest things I’ve ever seen were large boat batteries…

You could put switches between the panels and charge controllers or batteries and inverter, but to connect up the batteries in series you use copper bus bars and as soon as you attach one battery to the second you have the power of both. It could be done, but would need a lot of switches. There is also no off switch on the panels, as soon as they’re in the light they are producing power.

I have 15 panels (136 x 76 x 15 or 15.5 sq metres = 1800 watts) and 15 batteries (15 x 125 ah x 12v) = 22.5 kilowatts of stored power. Obviously less than half of that is available.

I had 2 x 6v golf buggy batteries in my camper van, they were great, but very expensive.

Sunday 9th June

Bike ride - 11 miles

Day started off badly, my wife went out in the car with the keys to the shed where my cycling clothes and shoes were, so I had to cycle in jeans and work boots!..not ideal, jeans have lots of friction, then half way along my ride I got chased along the main road by three massive Serra de Estrela sheep dogs (they’re like St Bernards on steroids) they chased me for what seemed like miles, snapping at my legs. It was bloody frightening. I was shouting “fuck off, fuck off” and kicking out at them, but they didn’t seem to understand. I must find out what the Portuguese for fuck off is.

Also I had to cycle the 1 km track to the main road before and after my ride and it was really difficult. I’ll have to either use my hybrid or drive there in the pick up and cycle from there, my racer just couldn’t cope with it, the wheels just kept slipping out from under me.

Monday 10th June

Hang snatch
2 x 4 x 88 lbs

Power snatch
5 x singles x 132 lbs

3 x 4 x 220 lbs

3 x 3 x 220 lbs

Dimel deads
2 x 20 x 154 lbs
1 x 15 x 154 lbs

Pulldowns
3 x 10 x 110 lbs

Military press
3 x 5 x 132 lbs…Kept clattering a roof beam at extension, need to move the rack slightly.

1 x 10 x bw

Band pullaparts
3 x 20

Must get out of the habit of having an ice cold beer as a post-workout shake!

Bike ride sounds like one you’ll never forget. I googled those dogs and they are beautiful, but I’m not being chased by three of them.

I think beer is great post-workout nutrition. If you mentioned having one pre-workout then I’d be more concerned.

We have a lot of pit bulls here. They’re the traditional dog of the south. They used to use them to hunt people in the pre-war days. Most are decently behaved. I had to stop last ride to face one down. Let him know I’d kill him if he came too close. There’s a bunch of riding tricks, extra water bottle full of lemon juice, pepper spray (goes by the name halt here), frame pump… The funniest one is to yell “sit” in a command voice as they’re running. Most times they get confused and try to sit while running. This can give you a lead. But, once timed a golden retriever (friendly) who could hold 30mph for a surprisingly long time, so unless your names Lance, out running them is more of getting outside their territorial boundaries.

On the Beer, I think it is fine post workout as long as it’s dark enough…

LOL. I’m getting there! I’ve never been much of a drinker, I’ve probably gone whole years without a single alcoholic drink, but beer seems to be the only drink that quenches my thirst in this heat. Water and fizzy drinks just don’t do it.

That doesn’t bear thinking about really.

Well I’d be dog food then. I don’t think I can even reach thirty on the flat.

Do you mean the beer or the day light? because I could always turn the light off.

Had to rush through because I had a wood delivery coming for my new roof. It was 32 degrees in my gym, not the sort of weather you want to be rushing in.

The heat is already affecting my lifting, not so much through fatigue, as I’m quite good in the heat, but in terms of grip. I can’t keep the bar on my shoulders for front squats despite using chalk, it just keeps slipping off. So I’ve switched to back squats until I figure something out. I am wearing a vest so maybe I’ll have to change to a dry t-shirt beforehand. When I did push ups and GHRs my knees and hands were sliding around on the mat and I’m having to chalk my hands constantly between sets. I even think I might have to wrap a towel around the bar for back squats for grip…yes I might have to actually use a pussy pad…oh dear god, the shame!

I protest the usage of lbs and Celsius in the same post(s). Come on man…

I see you’ve progressed beyond FarmerBrett-style training (patent pending). Although if you go through with this pussy pad nonsense, I might have to retract that statement. You’ve been warned.

It’s true, I’m a wine drinker (…ducks the hurled pussy pad…) and the only time I crave a beer is when it’s hot as hell and I’m stuck inside.

People here seem to only want to “honor their heritage”… Conveniently forgetting the horrors that heritage entails.

30 mph. I can’t hit that on a flat either. Unless I have a good lead I don’t run for it and hope to get outside their territory. I ride a lot with my SO. I try to draw them from her.

You facing 3 BIG dogs, that’s far too much excitement for me.

Light / Dark: Beer. Definitely beer, …

By law we have to have weights listed in kilos now, the EU and all that crap, but everyone of a certain age still thinks in pounds and ounces. Temperatures have always been in centigrade here, I don’t have a clue what the temperature in Fahrenheit would look like. All I know is 300 Farhenheit is gas mark 2.

Beg my pardon, I just assumed you were a man because of your username. Sorry about that luvvie.

Friday 14th June

Band pullaparts
2 x 20

Hang snatch
2 x 3 x 88 lbs

Power snatch
8 x singles x 132 lbs

Behind neck press in full squat position
3 x 5 x bar

Explosive chins
3 x 4 x bw

Dimel deadlifts
2 x 20 x 154 lbs

YTWs
2 x 10 of each exercise x 2.5kg

I don’t know what the behind neck press done in a full squat is called. I saw it on a youtube video, but I couldn’t make out the name of it. Despite having no weight on the bar I find these REALLY challenging. I have to work very hard to hold that position. I’m going to start performing them as part of my warm up each session, in the hope that they might get more comfortable.

It was 32.7 C tonight.

Annoyed to have missed my session last night because I am trying really hard to be consistent, but when rain is forecast and you have half your roof off, your priorities change and you get the tarps out sharpish!!

Going to try and get back on schedule tonight.
