God, that’s a lot of biking. I used to take bike rides many years ago and liked it just for the diversion, but if I aimed for big hills and kept times and speed records, I’d croaked.

I’m really enjoying my bike rides. There’s so much win as you Americans would say.
We talk like that? Curious what television shows you get over there. We do say “It’s a win win”, as in I win and you win too.
Lots of fresh air, pretty countryside to look at, a nice 70’s playlist on my Ipod (not so loud that I can’t hear the traffic mind you) and I get to eat several chocolate bars guilt free WHILE exercising! What’s not to like?

And it seems to be taking some fat off me and putting some mass back on my legs. I do put in some sprints too, especially up small hills, in the hope that some of the muscle will be fast twitch and not just the gay type (slow twitch). Despite spending over 3 hrs in the saddle on some rides the time really flies, it only feels like about an hour.

I’m planning a 50+ mile ride tomorrow.
Yeah, that’s what I liked about biking, the breeze in your face and the scenery rolling by. But I would have gone bonkers up and down hills and timing myself.

I thought all you Brits talked like that. That’s how they talked in My Fair Lady and Mary Poppins.
personally, I talk like Shrek and sing like The Proclaimers. No, really, I do.

(I’m not joking)

Bike ride - 64.35 miles in 4 hrs 24 mins - avg speed 14.62 mph

Did the first 3 hours averaging over 17 mph, which allowing for stops at junctions and traffic lights etc was not bad going, then from that point on my average plummeted and I literally died on my arse and limped home covering the last few miles at barely walking pace. It did also coincide with the biggest hills on the ride and a pick up in the wind, but to tell the truth I was bushed by then.

Not that I particularly want to go much further than that, but it appears that my performance is limited more by my inability to keep hydrated, nourished and comfortable in the saddle than a lack of fitness so to speak.

Bike ride - 33.79 miles - 2 hrs 18 mins - 14.69 mph avg speed

3 minutes off my previous best . I didn’t know what my previous best was so it was without trying.

Had to dismantle my power rack today in readiness for our permanent move to Portugal in three weeks time. So left with just an empty space and a barbell I thought I’d do some Olympic lifting.

Hang snatch
4 x 4 reps x 88 lbs

Power snatch
3 x 4 reps x 88 lbs

Front squat
3 x 3 x 132 lbs

Dimel deadlifts
3 x 10 x 132 lbs

Push press
3 x 3 x 132 lbs

Pendlay rows
3 x 8 x 132 lbs

Band pullaparts
3 x 20 reps

Light weights on everything because I haven’t done any sort of snatches for ages. It’s the first time I’ve had a go at the Dimel deadlifts, I’m not sure if the reps were too low, most people seem to do them with higher reps (20).

I forgot how much I enjoyed this stuff and how much it makes you sweat.

Man, oh, man did I see some hot chicks in Lisbon. What a great place.

Just remember, don’t eat the “free” cheese in the restaurants ‘cause it ain’t free and they charge for every frickin’ bite. One night I watched a german rugby team order the cheap “special” and chow down on the cheese while they waited and could just tell they expected the cheese to be complimentary, and when the bill came they nearly tore the place apart.

I haven’t been to Lisbon yet, it’s about 2 1/2 hours from our place. Everyone says it’s lovely, full of culture and stuff, but not so big that you can’t explore it all on foot.

I’m definitely looking forward to checking out the…ahemm…sights

Yeah I’ve been stung with the ‘free’ bread and ‘free’ olives thing before now too.

A German rugby team? I didn’t know there was such a thing!

Haha–might have been football (soccer). It looked like rugby shirts to my untrained eye.

There’s an easy way to tell.

Just get in to a fight with them, if they punch you they’re rugby players, if they kick you and run away, they’re football players!

Hang snatch
3 x 4 x 88 lbs

Full snatch
2 x 4 x 88 lbs
1 x 4 x 99 lbs
2 x 3 x 110 lbs

Front squat
1 x 4 x 132 lbs
1 x 4 x 143 lbs
1 x 4 x 154 lbs

Dimel deadlifts
2 x 20 x 132 lbs

Klokov presses
2 x 6 x 66 lbs
1 x 6 x 88 lbs

Pendlay rows
3 x 8 x 154 lbs

Still keeping the weights light (very sensible for me) until I relearn some of the movements and some new ones (Klokov press). I’m quite enjoying lifting with nothing but a barbell and having to clean everything. Real back to basics stuff.

I’m feeling in pretty good general shape at the moment, my knees and shoulders haven’t felt this good for ages, but now I have some stupid nerve thing going on in my trap/neck. It’s nothing to do with the OL I’ve just started. I did it a couple of weeks ago deadlifting. It is making it very difficult to get a good night’s sleep because of this deep, throbbing pain in my right delt and bicep. What’s most frustrating is that it’s ‘useless’ pain. I have full strength in my delt and bicep and my rotator cuff is good too, I know I’m not injured, just this stupid nerve is giving me false signals that I am. Hopefully it will sort itself out soon. I know I should quit lifting to help it heal, but I’m just really motivated at the moment. Bastard, twatting nerve.

I, too, luv dat shi’. Nice to see you back in the Oly mix. I need to start up the overhead squats again to get ready for some light snatching.

Olifts make me feel spry

its hard to come up with a formula for satisfying my like of picking up or squatting heavy things
and something that makes you just feel good- like an OH squat or power snatch.

very jealous of your move- glad to hear your hamstring pull is feeling well

Nothing by a big dry spell over here followed by torrential downpours that come down too hard to get soaked up. Me lettuces are parched and my kale has gawn to seed. OCH!

Due to numerous reasons, moving house, going on a 10 month European tour, my home gym being full of furniture, being unable to access or have the space to use much of my equipment, moving house AGAIN etc, I feel I haven’t lifted properly since November of 2011. So I’m determined to get back in to some serious lifting, mainly based around the Olympic lifts with some other stuff thrown in for balance and consistent logging.

I really don’t like this new small, skinny, weaker me, although my wife doesn’t seem to mind and nobody else I know seems to have noticed either! (muscle dysmorphia anyone?)

I have now been in Portugal 10 days. I have barely sat down in that time, most of it has been spent setting up solar panels and a battery bank so that we can have a fridge and lights, pumping several thousand litres of well water into a holding tank and treating it so that we can have drinking water, making a solar shower so that we don’t stink and making a couple of compost toilets so we can…well you know, and strimmering (brushcutting) a firebreak around the perimeter. I finally found a spare hour yesterday evening to set up my squat rack and hopefully today I can set up my high/low pulley and workout tonight. I have no shortage of training partners in my new ‘gym’, unfortunately they are mainly mice and spiders.

The internet, a free trial village wi-fi scheme, is very sporadic here. I might get to log later, maybe not.

Adios.

Solar panels . . . well water . . . compost toilets . . . wow, you’ve really got away from civilization.

Brett, I’m the king of muscle dysmorphia. What you need to do is eat, eat, eat. Sounds like you’re doing enough work to do you good, even without the weightlifting. Good luck.

I gotta believe hauling the deep discharge lead acid batteries around have GOTTA count as a hell of a lift…

He’s alive! It sounds like you’re setting up a brand new colony there. I would love to see pics of your new locale if you ever get the opportunity.

james

Damn internet ate my post. I’ll start again.

Cav - Think of life 60 years ago and you wouldn’t be far wrong. It’s not uncommon to see donkey and carts on the roads here and the old ladies in the village still carry stuff around in baskets on their heads.

You are right about the eating, I eat way less than I used to. I have to make a concerted effort to eat more if I want to gain back some muscle.

Null - It was a hard day lugging all the batteries around for sure, but not quite as stressful as connecting them all together, because there is no way to turn them off, the whole system is live while you work on it. You don’t want to drop your spanner across both terminals with 14 batteries worth of amps there trust me.

James - I will definitely post some pictures soon.

1st June 2013

Warm up and stretch

Band pullaparts 2 x 10 reps

Hang snatch
3 x 4 x 88 lbs
2 x 2 x 110 lbs

Power snatch
2 x 2 x 110 lbs
2 x 1 x 132 lbs

Front squat
1 x 3 x 132 lbs
3 x 3 x 198 lbs

Natural GHR
2 x 6 reps

Klokov press
1 x 6 x bar
1 x 5 x 88 lbs
1 x 6 x 88 lbs

Pulldowns
2 x 12 x 88 lbs

Dips
2 x 10 x bw

Face pulls
2 x 10 x 44 lbs

Chins
2 x 6 x bw

It is my intention to start every workout from now on with a warm up and stretch. I’m not getting any younger.

I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that I will never be able to do a proper full squat snatch as I just don’t have the requisite shoulder flexibility and never will have and no amount of dislocates and stretching (In fact when I tried to do that stuff it just made my shoulders hurt more) is going to change that, but I’m totally OK with it, I will just concentrate on my immediate goal of a body weight powersnatch. I think it’s achievable I just have to lose 60 lbs.

The first snatch at 132 was a muscle up, I didn’t quite have the speed. The second was much better.

The front squats felt quite hard, but it will come I know.

Looking forward to tomorrow’s session.

3rd June 2013

Hang snatch
1 x 4 x 88 lbs
2 x 3 x 110 lbs
1 x 2 x 121 lbs

Power snatch
1 x 2 x 121 lbs
2 singles x 132 lbs

Front squat
1 x 3 x 132 lbs
3 x 3 x 209 lbs

Natural GHR
3 x 6 x bw

Push press
1 x 4 x 132 lbs
1 x 4 x 143 lbs
1 x 4 x 154 lbs

Pendlay rows
3 x 8 x 154 lbs

Pushdowns
2 x 12 x 99 lbs

EZ curls
1 x 13 x 60 lbs
1 x 11 x 60 lbs

YTWs
3 x 10 reps of each x 2.5 kg

Band pullaparts
2 x 15

Hang snatches had more zip than the power snatches. I was very slow off the floor. Push presses were very slow too. I have to get more explosive and I want my front squat in the mid 300’s soon.

My motivation is good at the moment, I am fired up and really want to be good at this stuff.

It was 29 degrees when I worked out today. Very different from what I was used to in Wales. By August it is likely to be in the 40’s. Crikes.

Thats damn fine lifting. I’m really envious of your Swiss Family Robinson colony you are building.
