Made hard work of the squats tonight for some reason. Because the weight didn’t sound too heavy I went at them with a lackadaisical attitude and they nearly kicked my butt! Not that into squats right now I’m actually enjoying deads more. When the squat weight gets heavier I’ll have to take them more seriously and the fear of failure will kick in and I’ll try harder. I think today I knew I’d get them regardless, so didn’t put forth the effort I should have.

Better man then I!
Fear of dumping the bar keep me from going heavy.

Do you not have access to a rack then?
I think anyone with common sense would not go heavy without one. I’m sure with your huge pulling strength you would have a really massive squat if you wanted.
I have never had a problem getting “up” for squats before, but last night I just felt…what’s the word these young hipsters are using?..“meh?”…yeah, that’s it…right now I feel “meh” towards squats. Hopefully it won’t last.
Kp - I’m using a Coan peaking cycle calculator that I found online, which was originally written for his bench. I’m having a go at using the same progression scheme for deads, sqauts and bench all at the same time. I’m only a couple of weeks in so it’s a bit early to rate it, but I get the feeling that the low volume might better suit my deadlift and bench than my squat. We shall see.

Thanks Pete. I really hope your dog is OK. It is a horrible thing to go through. I think there’s a special connection between a man and his dogs.
That’s the tragedy though, the bigger the dog, the shorter the life.
Next time I’ll get Chihuahuas. (No not really)[/quote]
It is amazing how the mind works with regard to light weight v. heavy. As the great and powerful Weindler says, make sure you take the first sets seriously otherwise that last set will kick your ass, something like that anyway. Sometimes you think, oh it’s only xx weight, suddenly it’s heavy as balls then add 100lb’s and your mind knows it’s heavy but you smoke it.
Nice work FB and some pretty serious volume to boot! (At least from my newb perspective)
Sorry to hear about your dog, my wife and I went through that recently with our black lab. She was 14, bless her… In the end her hips were completely shot, so much so that she couldn’t even walk outside to go to the bathroom and I had to carry her.
BN - That’s about all they’re fit for IMO. They’re not proper dogs. For instance, I saw a guy the other day in the park with a Chihuahua, but he was carrying it. Who goes to the park to carry their dog around?
dday - That’s very true. I was complacent and didn’t give the weight enough respect. I sometimes wonder what we would be capable of lifting if we got someone else to load the bar and not tell us how much was on it. A lot more I’d wager.
Late - Thanks, dropped the volume right down recently though. Sorry to hear about your dog.
us old fellers need the rehab, or you get all crippled like me. I am instituting some of the hip stuff I see on here, and its starting to help, so its definitely worth the time.
i spend at least half my training time doing rehab / prehab / mobility. kinda sucks, but sucks worse to have cranky movement / injuries. hope you enjoyed your deadlifts.

Maybe we should call it geriatric lifters rather than over 35’s!
MJ - I know the rehab stuff makes complete sense, but I just can’t get excited about loading up my pulley machine to a whopping 11 lbs and knocking out set after set of gut wrenching, gruelling hip abductions. You know what I mean? It’s not why I do this. But it’s a necessary evil and I will make sure I carry on with it, because it beats being injured.
James - Yeah it does make us sound like drug addicts, but I notice we get less sympathy. All I ever get is “well it’s all self inflicted”. In this country you get more respect for having been a dug addict and having kicked the habit than to have resisted becoming a drug addict in the first place.
Kev - But if you didn’t devote all that time, would you even be lifting still?
dday - I sometimes wonder if I would feel “healthier” joint wise if I gave up, but it’s not gonna happen, so I’ll never know.
Alexus - How are you? Are you better yet?
late - Yeah, the geriatric “ward” would be more appropriate considering how beat up half of us sound all th time.
Deadlifts (with straps) @ 363 lbs x 8-8 EDIT:PLEASE NOTE ONLY “TWO” SETS OF 8*****
Leg Curls @ 95 lbs x 8-8-7
GHR @ bw x 5-5-5
Pull Ups @ bw x 10-6
Seated Row @ 198 lbs x 7-7-7
Ab rollouts (off knees) x 6-6-6-6
Haven’t done any ab work for ages. Joe’s comment on German’s log that a lack of ab strength may be holding him back rang true with me, so I’m going to start working abs 3 x a week.
Didn’t quite get that sensation of ripping muscle tissue I normally get doing rollouts after a hiatus, but I think that maybe because of all the push ups I’ve been doing, which is basically holding the plank position.
Still probably won’t be able to get out of bed in the morning though!
