Farmer Walks

Hi guys.

Since a few months i’m hooked on farmer walks. I do them twice a week. Monday i do them with lighter weights and for a longer distance. On friday i do them heavy for a shorter distance. I try to do no less than 3 worksets and no more than 5.

There is only one problem; the hall im using for the farmer walks only allows me to walk for 10-12 meter before i have to turn. The turns drive me crazy on the longer distance days.

So my question is:

  • is there any reason i should train turns instead of just dropping the weight, turn around and pick it up again?

I train for general strength increase and competing in raw powerlifting (-83 kilo class). I don’t have any strongman ambitions.

What’s your opinion, guys?

If you are only doing them for fun, I imagine you could do them any way you like. Set down if you want or do the turn.

Thnx. That’s exactly what i thought. But i thought that maybe some experienced farmer walkers could have said there are some extra benefits to not skipping the turns. I couldn’tt think of any, but im fairly new to them.

There are definitely benefits to not skipping the turn, but those benefits would only be there if your goal was to become better at farmers walks. Again, when the goal is simply fun, you can do anything you want, as long as you are enjoying the training.

Cheers. I thoroughly enjoy them. Brutal on the traps and grip. Ill stop doing the turns! thnx!

I’d definitely leave out the turn. Even actual strongman competitions are moving in the direction of not having a turn anymore. The turn is a huge additional pain in the ass that is more trouble than it’s worth unless you’re training for something in which you have to specifically do that.

Walk backwards. First turn your clothes around so it looks like an illusion. Sing the backwards man song while doing so.
