External Shoulder Rotation

My left shoulder doesn’t go back as far as it should on external rotation. I can still do overhead press, and behind the neck press. No weakness in it.

But its stiff on just the left side, I’ve started doing some mobility stretches like the door way stretch and the broomstick stretch. I’ve been doing them for a few weeks I think, not seeing much better range of motion so far. Does it just take a long time? Should I do these everyday?

Thanks for any advice.

As long as you don’t have discomfort and you cab perform the exercise properly then no issue.
On the flip side of this, if the mobility issue is impingement cause by inflammation then beating up your shoulders is never going to allow them to heal. Personally I would not do either of these exercises. They both put you shoulder in compromised positions.

Have you seen a PT? Just doing random stuff for your shoulder doesn’t mean it’s the right stuff for what your issue is.

When you do stretches or little moves to improve external rotation, you want see improvement Immedietly.

Ideally you’ll measure your external rotation, do the stretches, and then measure again and get greater ROM. But the effects will wear off soon, so you need to practice for awhile.

If it’s been a few weeks and it’s not working its probably time to move on to something else.

Thanks guys. It could be impingement , I guess that would also cause less ROM in external rotation? I haven’t seen a PT.

I can OHP and bench without pain issues, but If I do have impingement should I take a break from them anyway?

I could switch to neutral grip shoulder press with dumbbells or the trap bar for a little while as well.
