What kind of money are people making these days with these Degrees ? I’m switching from Computer Engineering to this. Computers are getting quite boring now, and hardware/software programming is getting old too. I ask also because I really can’t find salaries for this major online. Thanks in advance.
I am sure a lot of it depends on the client or team you work for. Really though, if you are doing something you actually enjoy waking up for, does it matter?
It’s basically because Exercise Science majors can go into a wide variety of fields. Certainly, the salary of a strength and conditioning coach will be far different than that of a clinical exercise physiologist. I agree with Chris; it doesn’t matter how much you’re making if you’re doing what you love. I could have stayed at business school and spent 15 hours a day staring at the ticker and pissing and moaning about Greenspan. Instead, I went with my instinct and transferred to a school where I could double major in EXS and Sports and Fitness Management (follow-up to the business education I started). I don’t regret these decisions at all.
No, thats why I switched. I love the stuff. I was just curious, thats all. I think it’s a ok thing to ask about.
Chris is right. Go where your heart is and you can’t go wrong.
Exercise science is a very broad major. This can be a P.E. teacher, strength coach, personal trainer, recreation person at a Y. You can go on and get a more advance degree to get into a specialized area such as physical therapy, etc. This is why there isn’t a specific salary figure available. If you know what job you want then people can help you more.
I’m leaning towards personal training for a corporation. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s basically companies are hiring out personal trainers to keep their staff “fit”, but I imagine everyone here knows what I’m talking about. Or even a personal trainer at a large health club/spa.
you cannot be a pe teacher with an exercise science degree. you must be certified to teach. i have to go to two years of graduate school to be able to teach physical education.
I’m not sure how much they would make actually, since I’m neither one of those. I would recommend either posting a new topic asking about personal training income, search the archives as this has been asked before, or going over to a site such as monster.com and looking for advertisements for that job and seeing what they have posted for salaries.
It’s definitely an ok thing to ask. People have to make money to live. But if you decide not to do it because the pay isn’t adequate, then chances are you wouldn’t have stuck it out very long anyways. If you love to do it, then the pay will always be adequate.
Corporate fitness is definitely a growing field. I suggest you check out exercisejobs.com (no membership needed) or the NSCA Career Center at nsca-lift.org (membership needed) to get some sample salary figures and job descriptions/qualifications.
Corporate fitness is a growing field, but it is still an underpaid field. Most people start out at at basic front desk/floor supervisor and make $10-15/hour. A fitness specialist/personal trainer who actually spends most of his time on the floor can make 20-30K. Site managers can pull from 30-50K.
Although, theses positions are usually salaried, more and more companies are starting personal training programs and the fitness specialist/personal trainers can work additional hours at the going personal training rate or can work normal hours and get paid different rates depending on duties. As a personal trainer, you should be making at least half of what your company is charging for personal training.
I would agree with Jason on this one. I am a corporate trainer in NYC and I make around $30000 a year a little more because I do privite training also on the side that brings in another 10000-15000 a year tax free or I don’t claim most of it. But I would highly recommend to go the corporate trainer route other then make it on your own or at health club. At least at a corporate site they give you salary plus added benfits such as health etc… the Company I work for even gives you Educational stipens for furthering your education when you get out of school.
Thanks for all the input. I’m very excited about my major change as I was already 2 1/2 yrs in my computer engineering degree, and I just couldn’t see myself doing it for the rest of my life. This I can. Thanks T’ers !
Im right there with you… I am in my 3rd semester of CS and figuring out a 7 semester plan for either a double major (kinesiology and business management), or major in kinesiology w/ a minor and business, and then go for a minor in business, or a BBA in management w/ a masters in exercise science… and i could get an associates in CS or networking in 2 semesters at the local community college… no calculus 2 or physics requires…
