Excellence Matters

Glad to know I’m not the only one who will repeat a single purely because I didn’t like the first one.

WARNING: THIS IS A STORY ABOUT PAIN AND JOY?.This is my feel good sports story. It?s about my daughter but I share it so that others with athletic aspiring daughters, regardless of the sport, might take something from it?.it?s a long story

Let?s start at the end ?My daughter is a freshman playing D1 lacrosse at Bryant U in Rhode Island. The trip to get there is the feel good part. My daughter had 2 knee surgeries; one soph year which left her in a brace for the majority of summer so she missed the biggest recruiting period for DI lacrosse…one junior year, which again left her on the outside looking in to get recruited this time mostly by DIII.

Neither surgery was for ligaments, thankfully… She had a bone growth on the back of knee cap which was causing havoc underneath with the Patella tendon and sac thingys that give the knee cushion. She also had a very sharp edge and corners on the front of her knee cap which contributed to the issue. The first surgery fixed most of it but the bone grew back. The 2nd surgery made it better. But the recruiting period was long over for that class year.

She was getting a few looks via her DVD from DIII schools looking to fill the last spot. She ended up choosing Assumption which is out in Worcester Ma…Loved the coach and liked the school. Now the next twist, as she is rehabbing her knee, one fateful day in our kitchen she goes to ( stupidly) hop over one of our gorillas as she lands she hears something pop and instant pain?she partially tore her patella!! This is two weeks before the start of her senior season…now my daughter is prone to drama but this time it was justified…She was distraught… she limped and iced and was generally miserable. At which point she asked my wife and I if it would be ok if she didn?t play college lacrosse…and we were like absolutely, we will support that decision. She had been through the grinder and needed a break. During this time she also received admissions from Bryant. She liked Bryant better ( I think because its closer and has better football team!..priorities of college selection, hahaha) So she also asked us if she go there instead( more $)…again she had our full support. ( it will just extend my working career another 3 or 4 years!)

The next step was to call the Assumption coach and tell her the news…The coach was awesome, told her she was great athlete and she would be missed …it nearly buckled my knees…She went on to say that she understood the circumstances and wished her well. It was a great call in a tough spot. Just what our daughter needed to hear.

The senior season gets underway and our daughter is struggling because of the knee…She is playing hard but limping and generally just trying to help out. It?s clear, if it wasn?t her senior year she would have cashed in her chips. Halfway through the season the Bryant assistant coach shows up at one of our games. Not see to our daughter; they were recruiting a sophomore from the other school. As luck would have it, our daughter is covering her…she shuts her down, strips her 3 times and although playing D, scores a goal. The Bryant coach calls our HS coach to inquire about her status and get a feel for what her grades were and what type of kid etc etc…when our HS coach informs her that she had accepted admissions to Bryant two weeks earlier. That afternoon phone call from Bryant…we?d like you to walk on and try-out in the fall! We are inviting to walk on ( coach speak for show up and you?ll likely get a spot). I wasn?t there but I am guessing there was one of those long silent pauses…Our daughter explains her situation and that she isn?t going to play because she is exhausted from being in constant pain she wants to give her knee some rest…The phone calls continue every couple of weeks just checking to see if there is any hope of getting her to try out. …Meanwhile, The HS team makes it to the State Finals. It was an awesome game…we lost by one on a goal with 3 seconds remaining on a play…I watched our daughter slump in dismay…the loss and her lacrosse playing days had ended…when she came home she was upset about losing and the flood of emotion rolled over her when she realized that it was truly over for her…that did buckle my knees. But we move on as life is like that, there are no rest stops!
Summer rolls in, the pain of losing the championship fading and a call from Bryant asking her if she would come to their summer recruiting camp. Our daughter hedges, the knee is still troublesome. The coach tells her she really would love it if she would and says you can just show up that day if you decide. The camp starts at noon, my daughter calls my wife at 10AM the day the camp starts and says she wants to go…My wife goes home from work picks her up and off they go…in such a hurry that they forgot to bring a pillow and sheets! It?s a 3 day camp. The knee will never hold up. So we tell her the half day and following full day that?s it…my wife goes over that with the coaches. No problems.

She plays great; basically repeating her performance from the spring. She wins two shooting contests, and camper of the day…Next day rolls in and its more of the same, at lunch break the assistant coach comes over and asks her if she would have lunch with her and the head coach…ok I guess so says our daughter , not sure what to do. The head coach asks her what two sticks would she like to use? What was her class schedule? ?Oh we need to change that? says the head coach ?that conflicts with our practices in the fall. We?ll get you hooked up with our teams academic advisor and they?ll straighten it out for you and go to a sports store and try on some Addidas sweats so we know what sizes to get you? at that moment they offered her a guaranteed roster spot, said there was no reason for her to try and walk-on in the fall if she was willing to say yes before leaving the camp?my phone rang about 12:30, it?s my daughter and instantly I?m thinking oh no the knee went again?..?Dad, they offered me a roster spot, what should I say?? The funny part of this is normally my daughter looks to Mom for advice on all things?. except lacrosse?then it?s my turn!

When she got home we scheduled an experimental treatment called PRP, Platelet Replacement Plasma, where they take your blood, spin it and then inject into her patella?it has made a huge improvement, she may have to do it again at the end of fall but its 20 min of pain and then just 6 weeks of no to low activities…but what a difference. It was 3 years of mostly set backs, pain, near constant pain actually and misery?.culminating in joy! Last week she was cleared to start fall practices with the team.

Your girl is very lucky, Goat. Not everyone can enjoy college sports. Of course, it helps to have very supporting parents.
