Even More Movies You've Watched This Week

Three movies in the last week.

 1. The Help. EMMA STONE IS A BEAST. In the best way possible. I’m crushing on her something fierce. The whole cast was strong, the story was great, and in the end the good guys won. I’m usually not a sucker for these types of movies but this one stands out. Grade: A-

 2. Red. Man this one had some serious potential but it didn’t come through. Line delivery was too deliberate, you could see the jokes from a mile away, and it was edited poorly. It was basically an old persons masturbatory glance at what it would be like to be old and a badass.

Not unlike Space Cowboys in that regard, but poorly executed. Shining point for me was the performance of Karl Urban (Plays Bones in the Star Trek movie, was also in a Bourne movie and LOTR). He’s good. I hope he’s in more movies. Grade: C

 1. Hanna. With Eric Bana. This one also had mad potential. I love Kate Blanchette and Eric Bana is solid, but this thing didn’t work for me either. I understand the premise and poor Hanna’s challenges, but it was too fruity, felt a little pedophillic, all the running around Hanna had to do and the way they chose to frame her.

I felt like I was watching a Terry Gilliam movie in a few too many spots and it just didn’t work. Bana’s German accent was spot on, though. I have an uncle who lives in Germany that speaks the same way, and if anything this movie prompted me to drop him a line and tell him hello. So there’s that I guess. Grade: D

Want to see The Help, as I like Viola Davis a lot, as well as Emma. Movie just looks damn good.

Red was a fun movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and Urban definitely has a bright future with Hollywood. He needs more roles, though. Especially to make up for Priest. Fun movie, but cheesy as hell.

Hanna just pissed me off. Immensely. I didn’t get that pedo-feel about it, but the ending as a whole just ruined the entire movie for me. No explanations, no nothing. Felt like I wasted an hour and a half of my life playing Grand Theft Auto.

Yeah man, the way the camera lingered on her face and whatnot made it feel weird. There’s a story that tries hard and just doesn’t come all the way through, but you respect the effort, and there’s others where the premise is really cool but straight up gets lazy in its’ execution. That’s what angered me about this film. They sacrificed telling the story more in depth in favor of showing Hanna run around a whole bunch. Poor choice in my opinion.

You’re right about Urban. He was good in LOTR, a definite threat in Bourne Supremacy, and proved he can deliver lines in Star Trek. Why he’s not on the shortlist for more leading roles is beyond me. I’m assuming he’s competing with Ryan Reynolds, but I think he has more power for the serious roles whereas Reynolds fucked himself with the RomComs, thus making him a little goofy in the viewers eye.

I’m interested to see how Safe House pans out though. If he can go beat for beat w/ Densell then I’ll change my mind.

Karl Urban is playing Judge Dredd in the reboot due later this year. If the trailer was out, I’d have posted it in the ‘movie trailers’ thread.

Thanks Roy, I actually watched Bunraku a few weeks ago.

Depardieu is still acting?
I think he does mainly French language movies, but he keeps busy when not urinating in planes. 36th Precinct is a few years old (made in 2004) but definitely worth the watch.

LOL, no - strangely enough one of the first things I noticed was how streamlined he looked. He must have lost weight for that part specifically. Then put it back on.

I think he did a pretty good job in Smokin Aces. Not a lot of room for “funny” in his role in that flick. Especially towards the climax of the movie. But Safe House looks fun.

I’ve been slacking on this thread for a while. Catching up with some of the more notables:

Robin and Marian - An old Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn (as Robin Hood and Maid Marian) flick from the '70s. I thought it’d be great with those two, but it wasn’t actiony enough to be a good Robin Hood story (save for an embarrassing sword fight between Connery and Robert Shaw) or romantic enough to be worth watching with my gal. Unfortunately disappointing.

Hatchet 2 - Great throwback to the classic unstoppable slasher/chop 'em up movie just like the first, and just as entertaining as the first. Nothing fancy or super-awesome, but some good gore and creative kills. Kane Hodder is all kinds of awesome.

Quarantine 2 - Better than the first. It’s not so much a “sequel” as it’s a similar storyline that’s occurring at the same time as the first film. But they’re on a plane.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (remake) - Pretty interesting. I hadn’t seen the original or read the book, so I wasn’t really sure what it was going to be about. Solid performances from Craig and Mara. It did feel a little long though, like it was dragging towards the end, pace-wise.

“Funny” story: So I went to see this on a Saturday. The following Monday, I show up at the gym to train and it’s playing on the overhead TVs. Not only is it playing, but as soon as I finished warming up and started lifting, it happened to be right at the rape scene. Felt kinda weird doing military presses while that was going on, but I turned up my ipod an ignored as best I could.

The Man From Earth - I watched this from the recommendations y’all gave it earlier in this thread. I really enjoyed it. Great story and great acting from all. I love films that have a minimal cast because everyone has to be on point, and this didn’t let me down. Tony Todd did a fantastic job, especially since I’m not used to seeing him do drama.

I do think it should’ve ended about 10 minutes sooner though. No spoilers, but the very, very last bit I thought was unnecessary (and yes, I do understand the guy finished writing it on his deathbed, so I’ll give a pass.)

This is a low budget film. No big SFX. Somebody kept forgetting to clean one of the camera’s lens, so for part of the film I thought I had some dead pixels on my TV. The story has a sequential and logical unfolding, which is a rare charm with such small films. Overall I liked it and recommend it.
Yep, this was a surprisingly good movie when I saw it a while back. Seemed relatively realistic and it felt low budget but not really cheesy (a fine line to walk, for sure).

Defending Your Life- from 1993 or so. Good funny movie
Dude, this is such a classic! Once in a while, when I’m about to do something that may or may not be a bright idea, I absolutely imagine if the afterlife is like this, how would I explain what I’m about to do. A great and under-rated movie.

I HATED Quarantine 2. The scares were non-existent, the “zombies” were lame…and the scene with the bald mute guy getting bit on the head by a rat is nothing but comedy.

That movie also did nothing to further the “terrorist plot” along other than to inform us that it got out and is now loose on the public.

If they make a third one and it is anything other than an end of the world flick with rabid zombies, I will boycott.

I actually won’t do shit, but you get the idea!

The only thing that made this film worth watching at all was actually that BASE jumping rat on the head scene. Serious lols there.

Saw Chronicle last night. Pretty good movie I thought. Nothing groundbreaking but a really good watch. They also did a really good job with the whole ‘footage from other cameras’ concept. Last 15 mins went a bit banana’s but otherwise was actually pretty cool
Professor X wrote:

True.

Eh, they had the crazy eyes and psycho speed. I didn’t think they were so bad.

Ha. As soon as that character was introduced, my girlfriend said, “He’s probably going to get bit, and then he’ll finally be able to walk.”

True.

Also, they had a solid representation of every character stereotype - sexy foreigners, sloppy fat dude, black guy, arrogant douche, wise-crackin’ youngster, tough older Southern lady, scrawny co-pilot/sidekick, lead heroine with daddy issues who has to take charge. All they were missing way a gay asian dude and a grizzled Vietnam vet.

In any case, I still enjoyed this one and it’s been a while since I saw the first, but I remember it being more stuttery, pace-wise. I might just have to re-watch it.

I watched Jens Pulver: Driven last night, and it’s simply great.

It follows Pulver’s training for his “last” fight in March 2010, but the training/fight prep is really in the background for most of the film. The majority of it is just him talking “confessional-style” right to the camera about his incredibly abusive childhood, his family life, how and why he keeps fighting even when he recognizes that he’s “past his prime”, and just him being human.

I’ve always thought he seemed like a really great, humble, and down to earth guy who’s not afraid to cry in front of people (and he does cry in the movie… a lot… and that’s okay).

Absolutely worth a watch if you’re a fan of MMA or, really, any sport.

Here’s a deleted scene that reinforces how straight-forward and relatable the guy is:

yeah, never heard of it so almost didn’t watch it. Then rottentomatoes gave it good reviews.

pretty good flick

I watched it based on the reviews as well. Although I enjoyed it, I don’t think it lived up to my expectations- probably because it had been rated so high. I had actually watched the trailer before the film, and unfortunately I think it made it look funnier than it was. That’s not to say it isn’t funny, just not as funny as I had been led to believe.

Dude, considering I doubt anyone expected to laugh AT ALL at a movie like that, it was honestly the best “horror spoof” movie I have ever seen next to Shaun of the Dead.

see, I didn’t really care for Shaun of the Dead, maybe never really gave it a chance though.

Tucker and Dale compared to most spoofs had a good flow and they didn’t oversell it.
