Even More Movies You've Watched This Week

The Grey

Too many stupidities, e.g., no heat in the plane, leaving the wreck, jumping off the cliff, torches that don’t go out, etc.

I was fine with the ending.

yeah, I thought the same about the torches. Overall I liked the moive, just wasn’t great.

The Thing (2011)- liked it better than the 1982 one. Great detail on the Thing

Spoilers:

I liked it too…I just wish they had done some director’s cut with added scenes to build more tension between the group. I thought the idea to at first use the blood…and then have to think around that was a smart homage to the first one while treading new ground.

The ONLY thing I didn’t like was the overuse of CGI. It isn’t so much “overuse” as it is the desire to see animitronix like in the first one on an improved level.

But then again, maybe technology topped out on that.

The Great I Am

Very enjoyable come up story in the seedy, organized crime world.

Chronicle- 1st 20 mins was very blah, got a little interesting from there. I give them credit, seemed like an original movie for once. Overall was meh

Watch Akira and you’ll probably like this movie even less.

The Ten

Meh. It had it’s moments, but it was nothing great. I don’t think I would watch it again. It had a pretty decent cast, but if it weren’t for that, it could have been pretty bad. A pretty slow watch for the most part.

The Good the bad and the Weird.

Shaolin

Was in the mood for Asian, both were good. The first even had references to the Good, Bad and Ugly as what I took as a tribute. Fun to watch.

The Killing Jar

Cheesy but fun to watch. A wannabe Tarantino film.

For a few dollars more.

Once upon a time in the west.

Tell no one.

And yeap @ the Chronicles. Very Meh.

Kill The Irishman - Gangster movie set in 1970’s Cleveland, based on a true story. Starring Ray Stevenson as the title character Irishman, Christopher Walken, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Big Val Kilmer.

Pretty good story and interesting characters (very solid performance from Stevenson). Felt a bit rushed in the beginning, like they were in a hurry to get us to connect with and like the main character.

The Muppets has only been released over her in the past few days so I went to see it last night.

Overall it was meh…
The first half was great but I was fucking bored for much of the second half. It was riddled with hilarious moments but it took a downward swing about half way through and never really recovered from that.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a movie as happy as this. It was good but I suppose I was just a bit disappointed

We enjoyed this movie very much, great acting in my opinion.

As a father of multiple teenagers this was pretty spot on acting by the kids involved.

Red Tails - pretty disappointing. Didn’t do justice to the factual fighter group it was based on. A Lucas film with too much CGI. Did make me want to read up on the Tuskeegee airmen though.

and just a quick vent - I heard Tom Cruise is beginning filming for a Jack Reacher part. I know this has been addressed in another thread but man that is a major downer. Great series with the opportunity to be a great movie…but not with that pipsqueek Cruise.

Just watched “Babel”. I didn’t think I would like it, but damn, it really knocked me on my ass.

If you liked the format of Babel, see:

21 Grams and Amores Perros if you haven’t already. Great filmaking.

Babel is so freaking good. Great all the way around.

Captain America. Serviceable Marvel movie. I liked it a lot, good action, Evans does a good job and Tommy Lee Jones stands out.

A quote from his character that I know I’ll use in the future. “If you have something to say, nows a good time to keep it to yourself…”

B+

The Descendants.

Caught up with this one too late I think. It’s been splattered all over every commercial break of shows I watch so I finally went and saw it. It’s really good, but would have probably hit me harder if I had seen it pre-oscar buzz.

It’s tenderly acted, to the point of being forced in some spots, and I think the loyalty spent on using a lot of local talent may have flattened the movie out a little. Clooney is a stud though, the camera is screwed right in tight on his face a lot during this film and you believe every frame, even if the other performers don’t match up in spots. A cameo by Laird Hamilton comes to mind as an example.

Standout Performers besides Clooney are Judy Greer and Matthew Lillard. Lillards role as Brian Speer is a major one that had to be played a certain way and I believe he really did a good job with it.

All told, it’s a good and complex story that does bog down in parts, but overall I enjoyed it. Especially the undertone message that Hawaii is indeed a paradise and needs to be looked after and respected, not just abused and stripped of it’s natural beauty as it has been in the past.

I give it an A and recommend seeing it.

That’s how I felt about it. The acting was good…and considering they took a character that has been so ingrained into pop culture that simply revising his origin could come across as trite and unoriginal, they did a decent job showing him not really as a hero…but someone who just ended up in that place and ran with it.

Cap is nothing without the leadership, however, and I don’t think he ever pulled that off.

When I think of captain America, I think of someone who would command respect by just walking in the room.

People are so jaded now, Evens will actually have to earn that and one movie won’t turn him into Indiana Jones.

The Bobby Dukes Story

Hilarious.
