Heres the thing, I just got a used weight set from a family friend, but the bar has one end that doesn’t spin. I think this is a huge problem, but my brother says its fine (he benched to prove his point, though im pretty sure bench isn’t exactly the main thought when the rotating ends where put on the bar). I
keep telling my dad (who paid for the weight) that it is a safety issue, but I really don’t have any solid info to give him as to why.
Could someone please give me the reasons the end on a bar spins? And why its a problem if it doesn’t spend? I know its a problem, but my brother is convinced its not a problem.
Shoot some WD-40 in there. It’s a problem when you’re cleaning or snatching. Slow static lifts like bench, squat, deadlift, press, not so much. Listen to your brother that squats 400+.
Well, right now I squat, clean, DL, bench, and press. I plan on doing more eventually, but right now im doing SS. I’m pretty pissed off right now though, I went through so much work to get a weight set, and when I say I have a problem with it, my parents ignore me.
I’m thinking about going and getting a bar on my own (play it again sports right now has a $110 285 pound olympic weight set used, bar should work fine, if not $200 300 pound new olympic weight set).
So what do you guys think? Would it be a good idea to get a different bar?

Normally, someone who is stronger then me I would, but this guy isn’t smart at all. He didn’t even know the ends of the bar were supposed to spin, and he’s been lifting on good equipment his whole lifting life. So no, he’s strong, but he knows pretty much nothing other then “lift heavy every single day of the week”
And I did try to shoot some WD-40 into it, it didn’t work. Next im going to take the end off and clean it out, though im not sure it’s going to work.
If the bar will rotate the way its supposed, I will have no problem with it, but I don’t like the idea of lifting with a messed up bar, especially not if i can get a good condition bar for the exact same price, if my dad would let me.
Thanks so far for the replies, im going to find out in about an hour or 2 if taking the end off will work (got to wait for my grandpa to get home so I can get some tools from him).
I’ll find out soon. I’m open to any other suggestions as well.
Actually, I may just go down to play it again sports anyway, whether or not this bar works. 285 lbs of weight (bar included) for $110 seems like a good deal…of course, i’ll definitly need a weight tree then, otherwise i’ll have 2 bars and 700 pounds of weight lying around my floor.
I’m very happy with my $50 Weider bar I got from Wal-mart. I’ve upgraded to a Pendlay bar for 4x the price. Before that I bought a bar at Play it Again Sports. I like the Weider bar better than the Play it Again bar.
