Eggs: Organic or Free Range?

Title pretty much says it all; are organic or free range eggs better in terms of healthiness?

I would think free range.

I go for pasture raised.

Both are more or less scam labels

Pasture raised is better, or if you know a local farmer

In general, good quality eggs should have an amber coloured, not yellow, yolk. The shell should be thick with a thin membrane

Farm fresh. We have our own small flock. 1 draw back, they are a pain to shell when hard boiled.

Back in Shanghai, my family had an “egg person”. The difference was huge. Too a while to get used to the bland Costco eggs here

We have 10 chickens. They make more eggs than my family can consume by a large margin.

All of mine are white legged horns.

Shells are very hard and the yolk is much darker amber color than store bought. They taste better too.

Last year I visited a chicken farm. (long crazy story) This farm was a family owned, commercial organic, free range chicken farm in Ky. They raised chickens for Purdue. The chicken houses were huge but very clean and highly automated . What I learned is that free range means that the chickens have the option to go outside if the choose. The houses have doors that open and close based on daylight and lead into a small fenced in area. The doors are set not to open for the first 3 weeks. The farmers told me that the chickens will not go outside if they don’t do so in the first 3 weeks. That’s why the doors stay closed for that period.
So free range doesn’t mean shit.
Organic refers to the feed they are given.
