Effects of Energy Drinks

If you like yohimbine for this, you need to try PPA (norephedrine).

Whenever I’d have a product with PPA in it, I’d give a capsule to each of the women in the office and they’d suddenly be in the best mood. The capsules soon became known as happy pills.

Coffee and generic caffeine pills are really cheap sources of pep. The obvious common downsides:

 • trouble sleeping at night.
 • crashing when it’s withdrawn.
that’s it? I can deal with a crash as long as it doesn’t interfere with any of my exercising.

cool thanks for all of the very useful info guys. appreciate it. I’m going to go with the caffeine pills.

Umm I only use caffeine pills, green tea and a supp that has caffeine+beta alanine and I’ll have some Spike Shooters once in a while. Redbull sucks IMO. Buy a case of Spike Shooter and you’ll never look back. Tequila lime is real good chilled.
I found Spike Shooters to be way too much. They give me cold sweats, my heart goes way too fast, and I feel naseaus (sp?), thus wanting to throw up quickly. They are the best tasting energy drinks, but I think they’re a bit too much. I also see nothing wrong w/ sugar free rockstar/lo carb monster/sugar free red bull, besides that Spike Shooter has healthier ingredients. However I have yet to really justify 25k% of one vitamin. You just might be very sensitive, try drinking only a 1/3 of the can next time and see how you respond. I sometimes sip on it like a fine champagne and I can make one can last 2-3 days.

One time I gave my buddy one and he downed it in one setting, lo and behold his ass couldn’t fall asleep for the night, he ends up going to the casino and winning an easy 1200$ or something

There’s a wide variance in how people respond to caffeine, so you’ll need to gauge your own tolerance, if you haven’t already, to determine whether it’s something you want to use.

Another question; What is the ingredient(s) in the generic energy drinks that is bad for you? Anything that will hinder my recovery, gains, etc.? I guess I might try some green tea out because I really feel like I need some form of energy boost before my workout. The difference in having one and not having one is pretty substantial for me for some reason (whether it’s my diet or something else). Although, I’d like to think that I do have a pretty normal, typical bodybuilding diet.
Check out some Crystal Light green tea peach mango, good stuff. This morning for instance I took a whole gallon of water and mixed it with the stuff and have been drinking it all day.

Some Chinese lady @ work just gave me a hook up too, she brought me about a 1/2 lb of the raw uncut green tea from Beijing. She even got me a cute little yixing tea pot with cartoons on it. haha

Best endorsement yet.

Sorry I implied there was only two possible side effects to caffeine. Those are just the common ones (the “effects” almost, rather than the “side effects”)

Plus, most energy supps are going to contain multiple ingredients, any one of which might cause an unpleasant reaction. That’s why the common recommendation with just about anything is to start off with a half dose on reduced frequency.

Is that substantially different from ephedrine, which actually makes me kind of irritable?

Its effects are very different than ephedrine on me.

I don’t like the crackhead junkie feeling I get from ephedrine, whereas PPA give a very smooth, euphoric high.

Killed it with the first post. Nice

Trader Joe’s sells pure green tea 40os’s for about $1, I just drink half before a workout and half during and I’m good to go.

i used to drink a stupid amount of energy drinks to keep myself up during night-shifts, it worked…but i wonder what the damage was lol

Where do you buy this stuff?

If i drink any coffee on a day I’m training I feel jittery. I don’t have any problem going to sleep but I wake up wide awake after 4 or 5 hours of sleep.

Needless to say, I don’t drink coffee any more. I sleep a lot better, unfortunately my intensity is a bit down.

You are likely sensitive to Yohimbine and will respond much better to Spike Shotgun.

Hope you weren’t serious about being worried about getting 25% of the RDA of a B-Vitamin at one time.
he said 25K% as in 25000 not 25% of the rda value

I understood that, but had a typo in my response in leaving out the “k.”

My point remains, however. Since they are water soluble, there’s little risk of consuming too much of the B-Vitamins.

I’ll try to give you the interesting bits from this Swedish article, which focuses on taurine (Red Bull). [Energy drinks--dangerous or not? Cases with severe symptoms with possible connection to energy drinks--more case reports wanted] - PubMed

There is no proof that taurine is dangerous, but no one is sure about the effects of high doses of taurine.

The article mentions three cases where people have died after consuming Red Bull AND alcohol.

One small study found that taurine, especially when consumed with alcohol, increased heart rate variability. But no relation between energy drinks and arrythmia were found.

Cliff’s notes: There’s no proof that taurine is dangerous, but drinking it with alcohol might not be the best idea.

And, if I’m not mistaken, there’s none of that stuff in any form of Spike.

not sure if the study looked at taurine alone or with caffeine, but i believe a few studies have shown that caffeine and taurine have a synergistic relationship, so if the study only looked at the effects of taurine, it may not be applicable to energy drinks containing both.

Good point. Can’t find the study itself, but the article just said “energy drink”, which, given the energy drink supply in the Swedish market and the theme of the article, probably means Red Bull.

Love Turbo Tea/ Speed Stack drinks, really helps if you sip throughout the day.
