Makarov has just said he’s going to do 520kg in September. It sounds unlikely, since 470 wasn’t easy for him (unlike Thor, who smoked it).
Thor’s 470 lift had less of a bend in the bar than Makarov’s 470.
Either they’re using different bars, or Thor’s lift had fake weights… ![]()
Makarov was using thiccer calibrated plates. His set up is almost popping off the ends.
Thor was using rogue I think and they are thinner so take up less of the sleeve.
At these loads the weight distribution makes a big difference. Just 4 plates a side with bumper plates bends a lot nevermind 500+
Good point. I totally missed that, duh.
Best guess, what kind of difference do you think that would make in the rarefied atmosphere of 500kg+ attempts? Would Eddie even acknowledge a 501 lift with those giant plates?..LOL
I don’t here it mentioned often but it makes a substantial difference IMO. Enough to start bitching. about lol. If u pull slack well ur looking at couple of percent points more weight lifted so at these levels it’s meaningful.
If anything Thor might be hitting this on the least cheating set up.
Short clip but at the very end Thor mentions how happy he is with the attention the sport is getting.
Terry Hollands was a 13lb baby, apparently.
Speaking of Terry isn’t he going for a masters deadlift record later this year?
That’s because this is total powerlifting drama silliness. Strongman has never cared about equipment set up. In addition to that, “cheating” has always been considered being a good competitor.
In powerlifting, you read the (extensive) rulebook and conclude “ok: these are the only things I’m allowed to do.” In strongman, you listen to the rules meeting and go “Ok: anything they didn’t say I couldn’t do is legal.”
It’s the same reason every promoter specifies that you’re not allowed to use tacky on the farmer’s walk: because Jesse Marunde did it before they said you couldn’t. Or why the farmer’s walk starts with the implements on the floor: because Phil Pfister picked his up before the judge said go and got a head start over his competitor.
So whoever’s going for record deadlift should grab the widest plates they can find
No bigger. Bigger is better after all
Bingo. If it isn’t prohibited, it must be legal. Much easier than the immense manual that comes with PL. I still haven’t figured out how wearing a watch while squatting provides an advantage, or still having the loops from you wrist wraps on the thumbs helps either.
It’s sometimes nice to go last too so no one steals your creative cheating. In my 6th comp, I was the only one on the clean and press each rep event that figured out how to bounce the log off the tires to conserve energy.
But I don’t think anyone beats Stumpy Raines. He took it to a new level. Really, a lot of times (Like your example) it’s just best technique modification to fit circumstances. It pays to not be too locked into specific equipment and form.
How often is the deadlift specifically limited to conventional? I have seen Sumo several times in the past at WSM, but always thought that it had to be conventional in recent times. Maybe it depends on the year?
If Thor comes out and Sumo deadlifts 520 kg, would that be legit?
It depends on the contest in strongman, always. There is no rulebook. There is a contest later this year with sumo.
If Thor pulled it sumo, it would be a sumo deadlift record. Only powerlifitng thinks they are the same lift, haha.
But a sumo deadlift is a deadlift. A conventional deadlift is a deadlift as well. Why does the conventional deadlift get to be considered just a deadlift record, but not the sumo?
Sounding a lot like a powerlifter over here, haha.
Somebody has to care about plate thickness, bar whip, and knurling. The philistine strongmen can’t/won’t seem to understand the finer things in lifting weights.
I am thinking about strongman, when corona is over.
