Eating Schedule for AM Workout?

T-Nation:

What are your thoughts on eating before and after a 0730 workout? A lot of the eating plans I’ve seen are based on an afternoon workout. What about the fairly early morning workout, what would your eating plan look like?

Big breakfast before? (How early?)

Big breakfast after? (Don’t have time to go back home, but do have military chow hall as a possibility)

Supplements before and/or after (assuming after, but combine that with big real food breakfast?)

Appreciate any suggestions.

I would wake up earlier and eat breakfast before. You were just fasting over night as you were sleeping, why would you want to train in a fasted state? Eat your typical breakfast at least an hour before. Supplement your workout as normal (depending on what you typically do peri-workout). Then go about your day and meet your nutritional goals.

At the VERY LEAST, take a few scoops of protein and a ton of water. I try to leave for the gym within 30 minutes of waking up so I don;t wanna go there with a full tum-tum. A protein shake works nice. I think I read somewhere that to prevent catabolizm, you need a minimum of 10g of protein. I do about 40.

i second getting up earlier. workout at 7:30, get up at 6 and make breakfast.

even if you finish eating at 6:30, then lay down/nap for 45min, at least you’ll be digesting.

peri/post workouts shakes are amazing; as are a nice protien/carb PWO meal.
