I will answer this and then I am done with this thread. Where have you ever seen me tell someone else to eat any of the following: “cookies, cake, frenchfries, doughnuts, Twinkies, GummiBears, lollipops”?
I expect for people to have some common sense. I am finding out more and more each day that it isn’t so common for some of you. EMPTY CALORIES have that name for a reason. There is a HUGE difference between EMPTY CALORIES and foods that are CALORICALLY DENSE. There is nutritional value in a pizza. There is very little nutritional value in a pack of Skittles. Wait, do you see the difference or is it still hazy?
Which do you think a kid with a bullet fast metabolism should focus on out of the following food choices if they already have all bases covered for the most part and have a basic understanding of nutrition?:
1 Hamburger - 1 Krispy Kreme Doughnut
1 Chicken soft taco without the sour cream - 1 pack of Gummi Bears
1 big 'ole Baked potato - 1 Little Debbi cream pie
If the second choice of any of those doesn’t seem like the wrong choice, write “dumbass” on a piece of paper and glue it to your forehead…with CrazyGlue.
What about Dave Tate who never ate vegetables for like 10 years?
I remember Berardi’s analysis of his typical diet and it was something like 500g cars, 190g protein, and 500g fat.
His diet was loaded with candy and potato chips and stuff.
The he leaned out in a couple of months or something…
Would most people respond the way he did to his old diet?
Mate,
Your from New Zealand go out the back and eat a couple of sheep a day. You’ll get plenty of protein and fat per day.
Some things I did to gain my weight was:
Consume 42ml water / kg bodyweight / day
Vary exercises, rep range, rep tempo and set volume every 4 weeks
Consume as much variety as possible of proteins, carbs (incl starches, fruit and veg)
Serving Sizes: Protein: Size of hand (palm only)
Carbs: Size of hand (clenched fist) cooked.
OR
3 g protein / kg bodyweight /day
4-5 g carbs / kg bodyweight / day depending on metabolism
E.F.A and extra vitamin B and C may also be beneficial
Weight train to build muscle. stick to mainly compound movements
Rep range: 6 to 10 reps
Train each muscle group once/week over 3-4 workouts
e.g. Monday
Shoulders, Triceps
Tuesday
Back, Hamstrings, Calves
Wednesday
Rest
Thursday
Chest, Biceps, Abs, Forearms
Friday
Quads, Calves
Sat/Sun
Rest

first thanks for even taking the time prof… . I know you think Im a lost cause and Im not listening and havent got a clue. …
I dont doubt a single word you just wrote… . and to read candy into your recommendation Ill admit was not thinking to clearly… . I know that its about making the best possible choice each time… . but my question was when I need simple sugars after a workout what is the physiological difference between taking 40g of glucose extra with my milk and protein shake or taking that 40g in a candy form?
as far as I know theres no missing micronutrients in either choice as there were none to begin with… . its just a basic simple sugar. …
I doubt Dr Berardi can be bothered with this thread anymore but if anyone knows more about this acid and protein thing that I heard in his 5 day course Id be interested to learn more. …
if someone had told me that my bulk may suffer because of the lack of vegetables to balance out this acid build up from “large” amounts of protein I may have started doing something about it earlier… . I seriously cant remember reading about it in any of his articles. …

He ate big and he was big but he wasn’t healthy at all. He wasn’t able to go down the stairs normally, go out and play with his kids and his blood profile would have killed anyone not lifting like he did.
When you’re diet’s awful, it’s easy to make some progress. Take any fat american and let him eat like Dave eats now and he’ll be certainly healthier. The thing is that few people have the guts and dedication to change and stick to their plan like Dave Tate did.

As far as sugar goes, you’re right. The difference between junk food and other foods is usually the nutrient profile, ie. everything else (vitamins, mineral, antioxydants, etc). You can get the same macronutrient breakdown (protein, lipids, carbs) but the micronutrient profile can be greatly improved by eating the so-called ‘clean’ food.
Candy also uses lots of high-fructose corn syrup which will only replenish liver glycogen and it will replenish it slowly without affecting insulin levels. I have to agree though that there wouldn’t be any difference between getting some dextrose in your drink or in the form of candy.
You’d be better to eat some real food with nutrients though IMO such as quick oats (which have a higher GI than rolled oats), bread or a sandwhich with meat, pasta with meatballs or meat sauce, etc.

It’s called ‘covering your base (and acid)’ or something like that. Search for it, it’s on the site.

You really need to get your shit straight before you start worrying about acid/base. You’re overanalyzing bro.
