Eat Clean or Diet, Where Are You?

If ones goals are muscle gain and fat loss (I know that horse has been beaten to death…) do you tend to just eat cleaner and hope that by building muscle you can increase your BMR which in turn would burn more calories etc…? or do you go into caloric deficiet with something like a low carb diet and hope that by shedding some blubber your gym performance will improve after “cutting”?

or in other words:

train harder + eat cleaner = muscle gain which could lead to fat loss

train hard + diet = lose fat and look trimmer. then go back to maintaining what you have

There are two basic philosophies that seem to work:

Bulk/Cut cycles - Alternate between periods of large amounts of excess calories or calorie deficit.

body recomposition - Create an environment of maintenance calories, or small excess/deficit

Which is more appropriate for you will depend on your goals, time horizon, and mental approach.
