Sorry to hear about the hip but I guess we are all going to have similar issue eventually. I would use this as a free pass to become a true gym bro and start pumping that upper body mate. Start the swimming and what ever light leg work you can do to keep healthy.

Someone who reminds me of a younger version, of where I was 20 years ago

Much appreciated, thoughts, prayers and positive energy fully accepted.

I’m counting on it.

You are reading my thoughts.
A new adventure in training. Plenty of folks squat and deadlift after. I’m not sure that’s the route for me.
It’s an artificial hip, wear is one of the issues.
I’ll find my training path.

You’ll come out of this better than ever.

I don’t want to sound like a witness to a science experiment, but keep us informed.

Much appreciated.
Right now, working on a positive mindset. Keeping my lungs open, moving to avoid blood clots. Maintaining lower extremity strength as best as possible with simple exercises. Knee extensions, hamstring curls, toe raises. Most movements that include the hip are out. Working above the site on “ core “ exercises. Mostly planks.
Some upper extremity to help with general activity.

Surgery 6/3. Left total hip replacement. Anterior approach. 500cc EBL
Home the same day. What is sore is my back and my incision.
Taking Tylenol and anti inflammatory in max dose. Narcotics make me feel nauseated.
Walking with crutches is my new workout.
Walker at night.
6/3 1500 steps.
2 sets of ankle pumps, isometric quad and glute squeeze, heel slides.
Goal for today is more , not sure yet what that means.
I think the meds are all worn off and I’m making sense, if not my apologies.
I’ll see how my new workouts progress. It’s not deadlifting 4+ plates, but it’s where I’m at.
Feeling incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to have a hip replacement and the opportunity to walk well again. It’s not true everywhere in the world.
A big thank you to Sir John Charnley ,the father of total hip replacements. A British surgeon.

Glad the surgery went well and you are already home.

You are one tough doctor for posting from home the day after hip replacement. Keep up the progress.

That was quick. Speedy recovery doc!

POD#2 ( Post Op Day) medical abbreviation
3425 steps yesterday.
51 minutes of walking as directed exercise 18,17,16
Using crutches. I can walk independently or with a cane but my family gets super nervous. They have been fantastic with help , so no reason to push that issue to quickly.
My short term goal is to get to 5000. Once I can do 5000, I think I should be ready to get back to work in some capacity. I definitely get tired as the day goes on . My return to work goal is about 2 1/2 weeks post op. Back to surgery 4-5 weeks. I need to stand independent and concentrate for 90-120 minutes to operate.
Interesting how the same mind set of training is translating to my post op walking.
Light weights hopefully at 4 weeks , lateral raises, curls , tricep push down, maybe seated leg extensions and hamstring curls. Hopefully bodyweight , push-ups, pull ups, planks to follow. Those are really full body and require getting up and down from the floor.
Right now , live in the moment. 3000-4000 steps today , >50 minutes walking for exercise time.
Not very challenging for most, but my current reality.

Resuming surgery in 4 - 5 weeks. I doubt I ever stand up 90 - 120 minutes.

.The time goes quickly . It’s not physically hard work.

POD 3
5300 steps with crutches.
Challenging but very doable no straining.
Plan is similar today, then cane or 1 crutch and see where that goes.
The plan is to use a cane or crutches for 3 weeks.
I’m fine with that, I want to push towards 10,000 steps a day .
Hopefully some light DBs to follow.
Good day, having a level of general fitness seems to be making a difference, recovery is not 1 size fits most. Those are the instructions. I’m compliant.

Making progress.

6/7
9600 steps. Mostly 2 crutches.
Good progress on stamina, 2 crutches is the least intense way.
Goi to take a mini deload today and transition to a cane. Then build back up to goal of 10,000 / day.
A little sore last night, most likely due to further reduction in Tylenol and nsaids. Hard t know for sure as my distance increased and the meds went down. Doesn’t matter which or what combination.
Continuing to move forward, eye on the goal .

Good work. Still amazed at how soon you’re walking. Does it feel like you have a metal object inside you?
