DZ, do you notice a lot of carryover with the strongman stuff?
I am trying to convince a group of old school powerlifters at our gym that we should try a day now and again where we just lift and carry “weird stuff”. There excuse is that it won’t help them with the big three lifts.

I’d say my new cinderblock rigs will really improve my shoulders and arms. I’m pretty tired and sore there after wards. But I made them primarily for GPP, same for the tire, a well known method of improving GPP for power lifters.
I’ll be honest though mday, the big three aren’t the be all end all to my lifting. But I will say that I really enjoy lifting the heavy weird stuff, especially the stones because they’re really difficult, and I feel it helps train that intensity it takes to lift really really heavy shit in the gym.
Also the stones are a wicked workout for the lower back. That’s usually the first thing to give out carrying heavy objects. Bottom line is, I’d say there is a fair amount of carry over doing these types of things for powerlifters.

Thanks for the feedback and thoughts on your lifting approach.
it seems that lifting and carrying heavy stuff would have great carryover, especially for deads. Mixing a difficult to balance heavy thing while walking is going to give your lower back more depth than just deadlifts. The focus, as well as the tolerance for discomfort will also help in all your lifts. I think.

Nice job on the squats DZ. Sometimes short and intense is the best workout of all.[/quote]
Thanks Skid, I would have liked to get in more work than that though. They’ve changed the Saturday hours and close at noon. I have a hard time getting in there before 11 or 11:30 being a second shifter. It’s nasty outside today, so no outdoors stuff.
Thanks for the response on the strongman stuff DZ. I will have to get out in the neighborhood and try and “pick-up” a few more stones for my workouts. This might be hard since we are going to be getting a few inches of snow over the next few days. Here comes winter…
My new Gateway computer from Best Buy stopped working Sunday. Nothing serious took it back and got it fixed right away. Not going to try to detail this weeks workouts, because honestly I didn’t expect to have the "puter back up and running so quickly so, I didn’t write things down.
Tuesday - Shoulders and arms
Wednesday- GMs, Bent over rows, and some more rows.
Thursday - HIIT, and several more sets with my new cinder block toys.
DZ, don’t be afraid to change things up or try new things etc. By now, you have a pretty good idea what works for you, BUT every once in awhile you have to test the waters to see if other things work as well or better or not at all. It all gets filed away in the end & more than likely you’ll be back doing the things you like and are successful with. Keep up the good work!
