DW Totals 1295 @ 165 Raw

Nice work! Thats a crazy deadlift to bench ratio, are you just naturally that much better at deadlift you think or is it caused by the way you train?

Thanks.

After all these years, I’m convinced that I’m just built better for the deadlift compared to the bench press. I’ve also been really trying hard to tweak my technique (e.g. arch, scapular retraction, hands, feet, etc.) on the bench, along with different methods of training it. At least I seem to be getting small PRs here and there, like at this meet yesterday.

Nice lifting! You’re definitely built to be more of a puller than a bencher. That’s probably better for your total, just not for answering the question of “how much ya bench” that everybody seems to ask.

I’ve seen better progression with upper body movements doing higher reps and more volume than most powerlifting programs so maybe that could help your bench. Because I am a bit like you but with my squat being higher than my bench (squat at around 500 bench being 310-320) and I noticed that the bench grows with focusing on the muscles rather than the movement. At least from what I have experienced.

And dont think you arent built for something, my brother is built terrible for bench being 5’9.5" with a 6 3 wingspan weighing 168lbs, but he benches 345-350 for a max right now. I think people will overemphasize things and limit you when its unwarranted

Thanks for the suggestion and info. That’s the stuff I’ve been reading/hearing lately. People have been telling me over the past few days that higher volume is the way to go for the bench press, and that’s the reason why bodybuilders tend to have a strong bench relative to their squat and deadlift.

Nice pull.

Wow, great job! Thank you very much for posting your results; that will definitely give me some inspiration, because you are scarily close to lifting more than me at two weight classes lighter lol.

I am really impressed and inspired! I am close to you on bench, but my squat and deadlift are FAR behind. Your totals are goals I have set for myself within the next 1.5 years while staying in the same weight class. It’s fantastic to know that my goals are not just possible, but certainly achievable as you’ve just shown me for our weight. Wicked.

I am thinking of going on the 5/3/1 program. Any suggestions?

Nice day…Great Pull!!

Awesome dead lift. I was going to compete in this meet (as my first one) but I couldn’t get off of work. Hopefully I can find another one close by soon.

Very awesome stuff!

IMPRESSED

<— THis girl, right here!

nice work man

Thanks, everyone. I’m glad I can inspire you guys.

5/3/1 is decent, but nothing earth-shattering. In my opinion, Sheiko is a better program for a competitive powerlifter. I used the latter with much success, a few years ago. Over the past year, I’ve been lifting mostly instinctively. More recently, during my last month of training before the meet on Saturday, I’ve been doing the Hepburn singles/fives routine for all three competitive lifts. Basically, I did each lift once per week, three singles with over 90% of my 1RM, then subtracting 50lbs and doing anywhere from 1-3 sets of five, going progressively heavier whenever possible.

hmmm…so it seems you have discovered that lifting heavy weights at near maximum intensity as often as recovery allows, and actually training the lifts that you have to perform in competition, is effective.
