Dbz was fucking awesome even if it took three months for a fight.
I remember hearing the rumors of a DBZ movie when I was younger. At the time, this show was my life. I was perfectly content with the American dubbed version and was hardly aware of it even existing outside of America. The thing that makes me kinda sad is that I probably would’ve went to the movie and walked out at the end thinking it was the best thing man had ever created.
You’d think they would’ve at least tried to make Piccolo look anything like Piccolo, though…
Also: I thought it was kinda funny that - YouTube was on the “Related Videos” list.
I’m a huge fan of DBZ (I still watch the series)and the movie wasn’t terrible. Sure, the casting for Goku sucked, and they messed up the Kamehameha, and Oozaru. But, it could have been much worse. I think that if they changed the actor, or he put on 200 pounds or so, the sequel could be pretty good.

See, I never had to watch any dubbed, edited, Americanized (which is to say, bastardized) version of Dragon Ball Z. I saw 'em right on Japanese TV, and read the new episodes in Shonen Jump as soon as the ink was dry.
I arrived in Japan in 1989, shortly after the arrival of Raditz, and was enthralled. I quickly located all of the original comic books (featuring fantastic vignettes that likely never made it to States, such as the boy Goku taking off Bulma’s panties as she slept to check whether she has balls, then later Bulma, unaware that she’s going commando, agreeing to flash her “panties”–twice–at Kame Sennin (whom you all know as “Master Roshi” for some odd reason), giving the poor old lecher a nosebleed each time), and read them from start to finish.
So yes, Dragon Ball holds a dear place in my heart.
This movie is a travesty, plain and simple. Couldn’t they have found anyone but a fucking weak-looking white American douchebag to play Goku?
Somebody like Kane Kosugi? Who actually looks the part, and is a good martial artist? Maybe?
On the subject of using “wholesome American white actors” to stand in for characters that are clearly NOT white in previous media, this has bothered me long before now. I assume it is because they simply don’t feel that American audiences can relate to a “foreign” lead character and maybe being white means more money in the bank.
Things like this are the soul reason that movies like The Grudge were remade with a white leading actress instead if the Japanese original cast or someone Asian who can speak English.
I am not saying race should be the primary factor either. If the actor can do the job and make the character better, then I am all for it.
When it came to casting MCD as King Pin in Daredevil, that simply made sense because who else in Hollywood that can act to any degree at all actually fit those dimensions without being a fat slob or wearing a prosthetic suit? I actually think it worked better and was the only character in the whole movie that I liked.
However, when it comes to many of these Asian media concepts…like The Last Airbender (which is actually made here I believe)…I expect for them to at least realize that their ethnicity is actually part of the story and feel of the world those characters live in.
Clearly, the American version of DBZ was lacking a great deal because there was never any sexual implications or even a decent story that kept my attention. I was aware that these characters were big on the other side of the world, but I just couldn’t get into these versions. They sucked.
Totally agreed on the ethnicity issue. I think the ideal lead role for Goku would need to be someone of Asian descent, skilled in martial arts, who can act, AND with a great huge ripped physique to match. It’d probably be hard to find someone with all those qualities, but it’s not impossible.
The same issue also applied with rap music. Hip hop and R&B were never the popular world youth culture until a palatable WHITE rapper (Eminem) came onto the scene (Vanilla Ice just didn’t cut it in the early 90s). I remember when hip hop and R&B were just an obscure subculture in the early to late 90s, and I used to read Word Up magazine! Nobody gave a fuck about rap back then except black people, and a handful of devotees to that music and culture scattered around the world. Everyone was still listening to Blink 182 and all that crap, and everyone used to hate ‘homies’ or ‘bombers’ (referring to graffiti taggers) which is what we were called.
The same with rock music - they were looking for a white boy with a ‘black’ voice and they found it in Elvis Presley.
Why does it always take a white person to stand in for the original culture who originated an art form, to give it mass appeal? I think it takes a white person to ‘hear’ a white person, in a sense…nobody white really ‘heard’ rap music until a white figurehead came into place. I, in particular, have always been disturbed by the eminence of Eminem. In fact, I think his name was a play on the word eminence.
Anyway, hijack over, but I’m backing up ProfX’s point on the ethnicity/palatability issue of any big productions.

Come on, it was a travesty. Well, I’m still going to watch it when it comes out. At least there are some hot chicks in it for eye candy.

X2.
I have an idea - let’s boycott the film. If nobody watches it and it tanks at the box office, then they’ll pull the plug on a sequel.
If you really MUST see it, then wait till a pirate ripped copy comes out on the internet for download!

If the second one comes out I will not watch it. The director needs to be beaten to death.
Don’t even watch the first one until a pirate rip comes out…make sure they lose money on it!!

You can’t turn Dragonball into a real live human movie…It’s just too crazy. Like how could you equal the intensity of the battle scenes and all the crazy power shit they do on film?
You cant.
Plus Goku looks stupid.
But I heard about this movie and saw the preview a long time ago, so it doesn’t burn so bad anymore.
They could pull it off, remember the last fight seen in the matrix trilogy. The first time I saw it I thought, “this is Goku and Vegita”. It would be a shit load of cgi but it would still be way better than this sci-fi channel budget movie they are trying to pass off as Dragonball.
Agreed! even the hancock fight with smith and the sexy bird looked like a scene from dbz! So much potential it had hmmm!

Thats what I’m talking about, the hancock fight scenes would easily translate to a DBZ movie. I mean wouldn’t you think someone wanting to make a movie about a cartoon series would have at least watched a couple episodes? This is complete idiocy. I say we get peter jackson to do a real one. I mean shit they mad a couple shitty hulk movies before they had a few good ones. They made some terrible batman movies before the made another couple decent ones. Just because some dumb ass makes a shitty movie doesn’t mean someone can’t come in and hit a homerun, I mean shit you still got Radditz, Vegita, Freiza, Cell, Androids, Buu, etc… There is 6 right there that would take you through the heart of the series. You could also split some of them into more than one movie, like the Buu saga which was pretty long.

It could have been worse? I’m forgiving just because I’m happy they made a DBZ movie. Although, I didn’t waste money on it, I saw it online.

They fucked up Oozaru? I thought Oozaru was the Namekian dragon and the Earth dragon was Shenron.
From the first choice of castin Justin Chatwin I figured this movie would suck donkey balls, so I wrote it off as garbage and never let it bother me. If I want to enjoy DBZ all I have to do is pull up the episodes I like and there will be Vegita in all his might stomping the shit out of some bastard.
EDIT:
My mistake. Oozaru was munky mode. Porunga was the dragon that didn’t want to be a skinny bitch.
I will watch this piece of crap out of morbid curiosity.
Then go to sleep crying in my DBZ covers.
My dreams… My precious childhood memories…
The stickers, playing cards and action figures…

Vegeta is more likely to get his ass whipped then trash somebody.
He’s all talk and rarely backs it up. Piccolo is the truth.
For those of you that think that DBZ can not be properly done as a movie…
Look at what fans have been able to do

Who was the guy fighting the androids? I haven’t watched DBZ in years and I completely forgot about that guy. The clothes look really familiar, though.

There was probably a pirated copy before the movie came out in the US.
