Some clarification for anyone that can reply:
When setting up a program, I am guessing that it wouldn’t be the best idea to follow up the down sets with other programmed assistance work such as close grip bench/front squats/incline bench/good mornings, but rather replace the down sets with this type of assistance work. From what I get from the books, the former would just run someone into the ground while the latter is the most practical way to go.
Thoughts?
Of course you could do both just do less. I do fsl last on each exercise apart from military press. Then follow that up with a similar exercise. For example squat day is squats, followed by jokers and first set last, then front squats and leg raises. Bench is followed by fsl then wide grip benches and rows. This is something similar to how dan green trains albeheit without the 531 % on main loifts and it’s working well for him lol
I do virtually the same as irishlifting. Sometimes I will do BBB but use a variation on the main for the BBB - i.e. front squats for squats - etc. For bench I use the dynamic template from “beyond” - 5x5 at 70%. Not as many reps but still 5 sets after the main work. I either use bands or a cambered bar for them. It works well for me. I will say though - consider this: some days I bench 5-3-1, then Jokers, then fsl for 5x5 dynamic. Needless to say, on these days assistance after that is light and well thought out; usually a bang-for-your-buck exercise I know works for me. This is because that is all I have left after all of the benching. Good workouts if you like that sort of thing:)
