Doug Young Is a Total Badass

1977 World Powerlifting Championships Part 2 - YouTube

I remember watching this a few months ago. He was a monster. Just amazing he finished the meet, I couldn’t imagine.

this is like a legend story, no Idea how he was able to pull this off. I was also really impressed with his form, no arch in bench very slow and controlled. Also squat nice and low.

Also 30 lbs lost in 1 week seems absolutely ridiculous no Idea how he had any energy to even get out of bed. -Not to mention doing these lifts on top of a broken rip-

Did he try the deadlift? I can’t imagine him actually doing it.

anyways I found the deadlift part at end of this

He won also, this guy is crazy.

Amazing feats of strength.

He was in so much pain after benching 535 that they had to give him smelling salts. Hanley, thanks for posting. Amazing mental fortitude.

That was some serious heart. Great form, and the powerlifters back then had much more impressive physiques than today.

I love how, despite being in agony and already having benched once and needing to get assisted on and off the bench, he came back…
“Well, Doug I know is certainly not going to let Clay Patterson out benchpress him so even with a broken rib, or torn rib or whatever it is, you can bet that this dead horse is going to come back out and give it another shot”

A true champion.

It’s always inspiring to watch that vid.

First time I saw this was on TV when I was a little kid…it never gets old. It’s unfortunate we’ll probably never see this sport gain as much mass appeal as it did then.

That was awesome. I have heard that a broken rib is one of the most painful injuries to have. Is the only equipment he has is a belt?

knee wraps also, but yes its pretty much raw or as raw as one would go for safety.

Speaking as someone who had their belt do the same thing as Dougs, albeit less severly, yes it is incredibly painful.

I have never used a belt since I started lifting. I started doing all the powerlift lift’s 2 weeks ago before I was just doing basic bodybuilding lifts.

There’s a big difference between a dead horse and the stud horse.

Having broken a rib myself(sports related not training) I can’t even express how tough that guy was, WOW. I had trouble breathing without having tears forming haha. Thanks for putting the link up I’d never seen it before.

My bad!

Doug Young, Rick Gaugler, Larry Pacifico, and Roger Estep were my inpsiration to get into the sport.

Talk about being as strong as you look. Wow.

I wanna be like Doug Young when I grow up. Seriously.
