Hello there t-men. about 3 weeks ago i collapsed my lung playing football. I have to stay away from all types of sports for at least a month and cant lift weights for at least 6 weeks. I cant go heavy anymore for a few months as well. So i dont know what to do, ive lost alotta weight because of the hospital stay and not lifting. Im kinda lost on what to do, any help would be appreciated
I was born with a collapsed lung that almost killed me…I am 100 % as an adult 6 1" 225lbs at 7% body fat…when you are used to training it is so hard not to do it…when I was sick I would go anyway and that would turn a 5 day cold into a 15 day problem…sometimes you have to give in and fully recupe…if the doctor says 6 weeks I would take 12…just suck it up and do other things…I know guys that trained through serious shoulder injuries…well what would have been a couple of months lay off turned into never being able to lift for the rest of their lives…heal up bro the gym will welcome you back when you are healthy…john
Your workout could consist of deep breathing exercises.
dont know about what to do to get you back to the gym quicker. Infact the first two posters made sence to me. But once you are back and ready to train I would start with an ‘anatomical adaptation’ (AA) phase as described by bompa and other experts on periodization. While this type of periodization has been criticized by an author at tmag (dave tate) when training for maximal strength for powerlifting I think that when you are just getting started or coming back after a significant lay off that a proper AA phase is important.
walk briskly, walk often. take stairs instead of elevator or escalator. Stretch. eat well. I would say that you need to do what your healthcare professionals are saying. Ego aside, there is a lot of time ahead of you.
Superman,
You must rest this injury. What was the cause of the collapased lung? Was it a penatrating wound, spontanuous(sp) collapse, external trauma (car accident or hard hit) or was it a tear in the plural lining? Anyway you did it, there is a considerable length of time for healing. The scar tissue that “heals” the wound can be very fragile. Tearing it again would be rather easy. Unless you want to re-live that experience again, I’d stay out. Walking, stretching, yoga. Don’t push it.
