Doing What You Want

Yeah, excuses…everyone has them…and the guys who stand out are STILL the ones who overcome all of that shit.

I do love how the assumption is that those of us who do put in the time without fail must not be working as hard in life as others so we just have more free time.

You quit training because you lack motivation, not because you have more responsibility.

As far as comparing yourself to “average people”…yeah, do that if your plan is TO BE AVERAGE.

I don’t personally want to be average at all…so I’m not.[/quote]

Every time I find it hard to do it all I remember Ronnie saying that he has an accountant title, was working in the police department while competing at bodybuilding. I know not everybody does that, but it’s proof that it CAN be done.

I am by no means a pro but in my experience anyone who accomplishes anything substantial in the weight room has a “need” to lift. I never miss workouts because i dont feel right when i do. There are days that i slept in, work sucked, and i got alot of shit to do. Quite honestly lifting on these days is a pain in the ass but if i dont, i feel lazy. I dont have good days if i dont lift.

Well said. I’ve only once taken extended time off in 10 years due to a shoulder injury, and I’ve never felt more depressed or irritable in my life. Each day was a countdown to the first day I could get back in the gym. If you don’t have that mindset, I find it hard to believe you will ever achieve the goals you set for yourself.

Bingo…and that is the point I keep making when people with “weekend warrior” goals and attitude jump into this forum and act shocked that the guys here are on a different level.

If your plan is to look different than you do now, going along with a half assed approach will get you nowhere.

Yes, this is time consuming.

Yes, the average guy who gets REALLY big likely made some sacrifices to do it…and no, none of that means they have less responsibility than the guy who takes off from the gym for 3 years because he had kids.

If you don’t LOVE being in the gym and making those muscles bigger and stronger, this forum is not for you.

This activity is NOT for the people who act like they need entertainment just to make it to the gym regularly. It is not for the people looking for a “fun routine”.

I’m usually looking forward to the gym from the time I get up. All of my meals, the hours I spend sleeping and my entire approach to life is geared to get me in the gym.

Obsessive? Maybe…but how the fuck else do you get arms over 20"? The guys in there off and on won’t ever make that much progress.

Dude, on top of that add weather–LOL! Something simple like that adds up when you talk about days off during weather season. Here’s a look from the dashboard the other day in the middle of getting 5" of snow and ice. None of the ‘regulars’ in the gym that night. That was 30 minutes to the gym which normally takes 10-15. If the gym is open, go. (This particular gym is a key gym).

I added a kid to the family last year and it hasn’t impeded my gym progress. I still get to do all the fun things and spend all the time in the world with my wife and 3 kids and still manage to find 2hrs a day to get to the gym and lift heavy and eat a lot and grow.

If an old schmuck like me with a good size family, a busy traveling job, all the shit that comes along with family and life (bills, sickness, home maintenance, car maintenance, etc) and a shit ton of other ‘activities’ can manage to live a lifestyle (mucho food, lifting, sleep, etc) conducive to muscle growth and make progress in a few years, then someone 10-20 years younger with less “overhead” has no excuse. Even older people in their 40s and shit don’t have an excuse.

In fact, the busier I get, the more obsessive I become with not missing gym time and it keeps me more structured. That’s just me, though.

Life and your body will dictate your days off without having to think about it.

Commit, dammit!

Getting motivated here guys, only got 3 more inches’s to go before the coveted 20’’ mile stone, another 10 years?

I think I top the list of over-coming obstacles:
A nagging wife who hates me bodybuilding

Well 14" to 17" ones took 10 years, and they were newbie gains, so according to my calculations I’d say at least another 30 years till 20"

haha give me 2 years…

Ur legs are hard.

when I tore my labrum and had surgery I was honestly kind of depressed. I had to wear a sling 24 hours a day for a month and couldnt do anything physical. It was probably the worst month of my life being completely inactive.

I feel like shit when if I dont get in the gym at least 4 or 5 times a week… I was out of the gym for several months after that injury and it was absolutely horrible.

that really sucks you guys. i couldnt imagine having a spouse or significant other who didnt support something that I was passionate about. That could really lead to a lot of problems…

I’m really glad my fiance goes to the gym 4 days a week with me

She complains a but but, she’d never tell em to stop goin or anyfin, and secretly i know she likes it when she sees changes etc… i kinda think she just acts like she doesnt like me goin. I kinda piss her off a bit with my T-Nation talk all day…

you say that now… but what about in 10 years? She’s just going to get more sick and tired of you being at the gym and you’re gonna get more and more fed up with the nagging.

Just my opinion but it seems like a disaster waiting to happen

On some level I do wish she would be more supportive and image conscious, but on the other hand it’s kind of her personality to be like that (which I fell for in the first place).

She’s quite old school and “hands on”, from a family in a small town who’re all very kind and close to friends/family (they would always be there for you)…but also the kind that would say all this bodybuilding is pure vanity and doesn’t contribute to anything helpful.

Speaking to my wifes grandad is always fun!

“weight lifting??! fit ya dein that shite for? it’s a heap a shite!..why dee ye nay dee somethin useful wi yersel?!”

A lot of truths in there, but I think this is what everyone should be taking home. Maybe your goals and mine are different, but damned if we don’t feel the exact same way about getting in the gym.

And anytime some jackass tries to call me obsessive, I point out that 10-12 hours a week is less TV than they watch. Although, given that I spend my entire day worrying about how I’m going to pound out one extra rep or slap another 5 pounds on the bar, then maybe they have a bit of a point. But there is such thing as a healthy obsession, and I dare you to find a successful person in any walk of life who isn’t obsessive.

I think my total time out of the gym ended up being 3 months. It was a very antsy three months. Then to come back lifting about 60% of what I had been was a very humbling experience.

That’s pretty cool. My wife used to go to the gym but then found out she loves yoga more and that’s what she does and she’s progressing pretty fast in that. But I’m appreciative in that she values health, she wants me to be fitter, she’s supported my need for spending $$ on training, coaching, supplements, equipment etc. I can’t ask for more.

She does ask “not to push myself to the point that I get injured” and since I’m still learning I read and apply as much as I can so that I can train more often. I do believe though the less you tell them about what you do in the gym the better, or speak in very general terms - unless they’ve got a passion or been in a situation of discipline to build their body they probably won’t understand your approach.

Of course this is not everyone I have a few friends (female) that are obsessive in getting leaner and stronger and it’s great being around them too, they put a lot of guys to shame with their dedication.

PS - congrats on the engagement Greg!

Thanks a lot man. My girl likes yoga too and I got a membership to a yoga studio with her. It was way harder than i thought! We did core power yoga thats heated so there is a lot more strength involved than i expected. I thought it would be just an hour long stretching routine (which i needed) but I was way wrong.

Anyone who hasnt done a hot yoga class should try it out. Definitely is relaxing and you’ll sweat your ass off in there. Its a good time… plus the hot yoga babes are… well hot
