Doing Dumb Stuff as a College Kid

Going to go with this one. The coaching breaks down to $43 a month for 3 months and I’ve been eyeballing it for a while. So I’ll cut back on extra purchases to make it work

Could be, yes.

The issue with trying to decipher form at max weight is obviously that it’s maximal weight. So the line between the issue being technique or it being strength gets blurred a bit.

I’d say I (and whoever else will/would chime in that has a more experienced eye) would have a more accurate gauge on if it’s a issue due to technique or just natural breakdown resulting from not being strong enough to pull the weight. Based off your 435, something like 400 would probably be a better gauge.

But from what I can see you have pretty similar positioning to me so I think I might have an idea on how the setup feels. Especially with the Upper Back Rounding all the way through. That’s not an inherently bad thing but it does make the positioning from the knees up extremely difficult to finish. This should be generating a lot more speed off the floor though so usually you can overcome that. Your low back is giving a little bit, that’s also going to make it twice as hard. Your hips also look like they rise up a tad bit earlier than I think they should. I do think this is more of a overall strength issue, personally.

Have you ever experimented with a Dynamic Start? It looks like you prefer to start from a static position. The starting hip position is pretty good nothing I can tell is wrong with that, if it feels comfortable then keep it. I like to start just a tad bit lower to load up my hips and quads a bit more in order to gain some more speed off the floor. Not too much lower though.

Also a personal cue I use now and days is to “lead from the back”. It’s something that helps me alot. Right before I pull, I envision myself “pulling” my upper back and traps up & back, almost like I’m scooping ice cream. It has helped immensely with my timing and engaging my back properly and has prevented me from shooting my hips up early, I also have a tendency to look down at the floor on the initial pull which throws me off and it has helped fix that too. This part is subjective but I thought I’d share my anecdote at least.

Pete briefly talks about the head forward positioning here

This is an EXTREMELY good video on how to utilize stretch reflex on the deadlift

This I just share to everyone who asks for advice because it’s a wealth of knowledge on the mechanics of the deadlift for your body. We strive to work with our leverages, not against them.

Edit:

Oh yea, I forgot who it was but I know alot of people went over this with @alex_uk when he asked for Deadlift advice. Maybe he’ll remember. I’ve got trash memory lol

Thanks for the response! I’ll try out the dynamic start. I’ve always just pulled statically because I pulled with almost stiff legs for the longest time lol. Also, this is the first time pulling a normal deadlift in a long time

Yeah realistically

I was thinking this on set up but once the weight broke off the ground, it was out the window lol

I’ll watch the videos in a little bit. I see a Sika strength video and those guys are awesome!

  • Using MST systems app to program for it

To pull that first one and still go up in weight is amazing and I’m not saying that sarcastically.

I have used that.

Don’t get it confused. I went for broke with 450 and then backed it down to 435 lmao

That makes more sense, haha. Doesn’t change much though. After going balls to the wall, I usually can’t go for another one

How did you like mst systems?

  • CrossFit linchpin wod
  • @KonsuTheTraveller I played with the dynamic start on the 350x3. It felt really good. I thought my phone recorded the whole thing but it didn’t

That’s great to hear man. It’ll take some time to find what works best. I have to stop deadlifting for awhile, so at least I can live vicariously through you

Finger curls: 100 reps total

Notes:

  • Running this along with my actual program from mst. This is for those days where I have to lift in class. Chance to get more forearm and arm work in
  • Used this for lighter workout today. Drank a little bit yesterday while smoking the meats. Didn’t get in enough water so I feel like shit today
  • Got a smoker for my mom’s house. Didn’t get too many pictures but we did 6 chickens, Brussels sprouts, and Mac and cheese

Warm up: ~10 mins
MST big 5
Single arm pullover on side + reverse squats

Main work: ~60 min

Log clean and press every rep: 155x3x5
Strict log press: 105x3x9, 8,7| 120x6| 135x1 (supposed to be 3)
Close grip bench: 95x5x10
Bent over row: 115x5x10
Lu raise: 15x10, 10x12,12
Rear delt fly: 15x3x20

Conditioning: 10 rounds bike sprints: 10 on, 20 off

Notes:

  • This is using a program I built in the app
  • I think performance was off because of the drinking and it still getting out my system
  • MST big 5 is similar to mcgill big 3. hopefully this will help with my hip issues (Outer hip/glute stuff. Might because it’s practically prehab for core bracing) so we will see
  • Almost past out on log so 155 was my working weight. I shaved off the beard (once again I fucked up trying to style it) and I kept smacking myself in the chin with the log. Are beards protective equipment? They must be

I’ve seen the reverse: dudes catch their beards on the log clean and it pulls them face first into the log. Same with beards getting stuck on the stones.

It’s like a deadlift suit. Either it helps or you pass out strapped into the bar lol

Time: 40 mins

2x8 lateral step downs

Snatch grip paused touch and go deadlifts: 245x7, 225x3x7
Front squats: 155x16, 155x2x6

Notes:

  • Spent most of the day doing yard work at my grandmas so I was kinda just done after what was supposed to be the 20 rep set
  • Going to be very transparent. I am extremely emotionally flat this week. Monday my sister miscarried. Wednesday, GF and I had an extremely emotionally heavy conversation about how I deal with stuff. I’m not hard to deal with per say it’s just very different to how she deals with stuff. I kinda move on and bring stuff up has it pops into my mind. She’s way more outwardly expressive of emotions like that. It was not a malicious conversation just one about being better partners for each other. That’s the main reason this session was moved to today. I was just fucking done yesterday and needed the day off from everything
  • Partying with a friend tonight to take my mind off things and have to watch my nephew tomorrow so I might or might not get around to lifting tomorrow
  • Also just finished listening to “Red Rising” on audible. It was an absolute banger

Now to brighten up this post with dog stuff

I looked that up. I might put it on my list. Your Alsatian seems to have taken relaxation courses from my Alsatian. Resting up for the next chew fest.

I’m so sorry, please give your sister a big hug from me. She, her family, and you will be in my prayers. My sister miscarried at Christmas 5 years ago and she would tell you that it was the most emotionally painful experience she’s ever had. Give your sis lots of love right now and every year when this day rolls around, let her know you’re thinking about her. She will never forget and it will always be hard.

Sorry to hear abut your sister mate. I understood exactly where you were coming from when you said you move on a bring it up later. I do this too. I also have a tendency to run thoughts and conversations in my mind over and over without expressing them. Sometimes this helps me just work things out but not always, and I have found as I got older, just talking about things even if it is indirectly always has a better outcome.

@Friedrich it was a massive break from chewing! I started the second book in that series and I haven’t been able to put it down
@QuadQueen Thanks. She’s pretty lucky to have her church and homeschool group would’ve gave her a lot of food and taken her son out to do stuff. As a family, at least my mom and I, we ended up cooking her a lot of food today also

Glad Lily is okay! I couldn’t be left alone around a box of chocolate either.

The smoked meat looks amazing, nice work!
