Basically just a video for their socials promoting the IV place. In return, they are going to give me an IV with Magnesium, Amino Bled, L-Carnitine, B-Complex, and Glycine.

Huh, I never knew there were IV places. So people actually willingly go and pay to get intravenous fluids? Weird.

It’s becoming a bigger thing. This place is right by LSU so they did the smart thing in getting involved in LSU’s greek life. They are stupid expensive though

The one I had done to me, I felt amazing the next day but I wouldn’t be willing to pay for it all the time.

I am not going to get into the practice itself/ my opinion on it because I don’t want to be disrespectful and make it look like my intention is to talk negative about your news or your sister’s work.

Hey, say what you want! I’ll start off by saying I’d never pay for it and think the vast majority of people don’t need it. It’s one of those health optimization things that gets marketed as something that will help the health journey, even though it’s a non-essential, but hey if you can get someone to pay for it, why not? Also since, it’s a non-essential medical treatment (in this context for most) I have no issues with the business side of it.

I’m curious to hear your thoughts and I know your intention isn’t to talk negative or sound disrespectful, you are just sharing your thoughts!

From my standpoint of knowledge (which in case of IV transfusion doesn’t go beyond my experience in hospitals - not as someone who admits them! - and a fairly recent podcast from Barbell Medicine) there is hardly any scenario ever to give someone IV fluids if they are in the shape to take in sufficient amounts via oral consumption. So definitely no warranty to just hook up people who wander in. Most of the supplementation claims are completely without any scientific basis whatsoever anyways.

Here’s - in very short - why I am critical of an adjunct therapy that isn’t likely to harm people (although not without any risk!) and that is in theory only admitted to those with money to spare:
Fear mongering and unethical medical claims. That is something that I feel compelled to call out from a professional standpoint and do so in my own profession a lot. Even the suggestion that levels of ‘XY’ aren’t “optimal” (without a reliable base of evidence) might persuade someone to a) spend money on something they don’t need, b) make them worry about their health without any warranty which can have significant effect on someone’s actual health and c) putting a bad reputation on actual medical providers (“my doctor would never check for any of that stuff! Typical school medicine!” Yeah nah, he doens’t have a lot of reason to check for any of that stuff).

I am not against doing things beyond what’s necessary. I only want people to tell the truth and be honest about what is known about what they are doing. I don’t mind people using manual therapy or even myself using manual therapy on patients. I do mind when people try to frame the benefits beyond what’s reasonable/ based on evidence (for example the ole’ ‘your spine is misaligned and I’m putting your SI joint back in’). Because that is unethical, even if you argue that a placebo effect could be a desirable outcome of an intervention (which is definitely a debate).

I hope that makes my scepsis somewhat clear. I don’t have anything specific against any one provider nor do I know in detail how they operate. I just have a - in my mind - healthy scepsis against stuff like this and am in what I do as scientifically driven as I can, a standard to which I want every medical provider to be held up to.

I know nothing about IVs for sports recovery.

BUT! In high school my wrestling coach had the idea that I could get really lean and wrestle 170. For reference, I’d play football at about 220, and cut to about 190 ish, then do a cut before meets to wrestle at 182. I had abs at 193, maybe not completely shredded but pretty lean.

on top of my normal cutting routine, the day before the meet I ate nothing but pickles and de-ionized water, and took several hot baths and sauna sessions to sweat out as much as I could. Hit the scale at 169.8… and proceeded to legitimately pass out completely when we started warming up. Athletic trainer hooked me up to an IV and I wasn’t allowed to wrestle that meet.

Coach kept me at 182 after that.

I agree with all of this. It’s a shitty thing to be just a business person doing something like this with no medical background. I think there’s a lot of this in the health industry.

I agree with both statements. I think if it was advertised as a “luxury” supplement, it would be a different story. I guess in some cases it is but majority of the time not.

Just a sidebar, are you a physical therapist? (Not related to the current convo, I’m interested in this as a career path).

There is a lot of great conversation to be had in this but I do feel shitty that I don’t have the time right now to give a good response. I appreciate you posting that it was a great read and I will respond more in a few days!

I have a degree in what you’d translate as exercise science, a physical therapy license and am finishing another bachelor degree in ‘therapy science’ which is kind of an addendum to my physical therapy education, if you will.

Please don’t feel bad about this. Thank you for opening up the space for a conversation on the topic and there really is no reason you should feel compelled to even pick up the topic again, unless you really want to.

Sweet setup, unfortunate circumstances. I got my brother’s custom built gaming computer after he departed this reality. I loved being able to pick up the games where he left off. It’s amazing how much the little things help you through the grief.
I am glad you are taking the time to work through it. You are remaining very logical and strong through the deaths and have a lot of respect for that. Time helps, but a healthy mental state helps a lot more.

That’s really cool! I’m getting similar use out of the stereo system when just doing stuff around the house. Using it instead of my phone for music. It’s weird how the physical media and inability to skip songs feels way better in a way than listening to stuff on your phone.

Thanks! In a way, I think that this is the “test” for the stuff I think about mental health and training. I’m seeing and treating these events as a chance to grow in a multitude of ways.

It depends. Somedays its prepping for the day, just being present, thinking, or decompress/reflecting. I try not to have intentions for the walk but rather do whatever feels like I need when I take it.

  • No preworkout felt a lot better than pre. I can control my heart rate more and work through quicker.
  • Thinking about doing the 15x1 with box squat so I can have some more hip power for 13in DL.
