Doing Dumb Stuff as a College Kid

HP W8D4

Time: 62 mins

Log: work up to 190x4, 160x3,4,2
Tempo CGBP: 165x9,7
Chins: BWx13, 45x2+35x2, 35x3x4
V-Bar pushdown Density sets: 12 min for 72 reps total

Notes:

  • Jesus I had a headache all day. Log was getting super iffy with blacking out so when I dropped the top set, I called it. Took some reps off the backdowns too
  • Shoulder was hurting when I got my arms to 90 degrees. That messed up logs rack position
  • I rested a lot during this. Moved slow as hell and log like 30 minutes between warming up and getting through back offs. I did have a sugary soda mid workout and that helped the headache a ton
  • Had a busy morning. Had to take dog to vet and that took forever. Appointment at 8am, the vet didn’t show up until 8:40, and then finally got out at 9:30 or so. All for a possible UTI with batdog. Kinda annoying but whatever
  • Onto recovery stuff. I need more food and more sleep. I have no more time to eat in the day, so I’m looking to add more to my meals. Last night, I had chicken tenderloin, rice, and pasta sauce. I had sat on the couch to eat then mid meal I thought ā€œGod I’m tiredā€. So I set the food down and fell asleep for like 30 minutes. Good times. I’m really pushing myself to be proactive with my reading and studying so when the day comes to an end, I’m just tired. Come to think of it, I wonder if the headache was from sleeping weird on the couch
  • I have no interest in tracking calories but I think I’ll start taking pictures of my food to see what I’m actually eating in a day

Conditioning:

40 min run/walk

Notes:

  • more running than walking
  • Rugby starts up today but I don’t think I can lose the sleep this week so I’m not going. Plus I need more time to study
  • planning to build this up to 45 minutes of running like @unicornsandrainbows plan says. Watch and phone were dead so no external data for this day
  • I’m channeling my inner mark bell for these lower intensity runs. Not being super strict but rather enjoying it and letting myself do it while building it up
  • Attempt to do the upper body conditioning today but my shoulder says no. Even face pulls hurt

Sorry to hear that.

Clean: 95x4, 115x3, 135x4, 155x7
Squat: 155x3, 205x3, 245x3, 265x2, 295x5, 265x5,4,3,3
Higher incline pin press: 185x9,7
Rack pull: 355x5,4

Notes:

  • My squats are coming back! The variations from last cycle helped a ton
  • Move up the pin on pin press bc of my shoulder. Going to do some off the book face pulls in a minute
  • Rack pulls. I went for the bare minium to beat last week. Those single leg hand supported RDLs really beat my posterior up so I made this a ā€œskillā€ day
  • Pretty proud to say I did the cleans without straps
  • My monkey wrench for the day was another trip to the vent. This time the damn lily dog hurt her leg playing last night so we will see how that pans out

hang cleans: 155x7

Paused deadlift: 155x3, 245x3, 295x3, 335x2, 365x4.75, 365x3x4
Bench: 215x4,4
DB OHP: 55x8, 65x5
DB BSS split squat: 12 min density set with 80lbs: 60 reps each leg

Notes:

  • I like fell forward on the paused deadlift. That shit kinda pissed me off. On the other hand, 365x5 was my training max for deadlift when I played with 5/3/1 a few weeks ago and I pulled it for a set of paused deadlift. Pretty happy with that. That might tell me something about how I run 5/3/1 inefficiently. Just looking back at the old video and my start position is so less fucked now. I think all the heavy hinging has opened my hamstrings and strengthened them to be useful in the pull
  • Just realized how snappy those deadlifts looked
  • 2 days off was nice. Didn’t have my running shoes so no running. Not much walking either. Lily sprained her knee so she’s on rest mode for a few weeks. It is hell trying to keep a mal mix calm. Even Friday morning she was bouncing around on 3 legs like nothing was wrong. Upping the scent work stuff with her

@T3hPwnisher If I remember correctly, you go on Disney cruises right? If so, I have some questions about things to do if you don’t mind! My family and I are going on one in the summer

Be happy to share my perspective, but I’ll let you know that my wife does all the booking and I just show up and have fun, haha.

Same situation for me! I was curious about a couple of things:

  • How was the food offered at the serve yourself dining areas? Was it only fried stuff or was there a variety?
  • How are the adult-oriented activities?
  • Does the app with the messenger actually work now? The last Disney cruise I went on was like 8 years ago but I do remember that app being finicky.
  • Do you or your wife have any good resources on stuff offered to do on past cruises?

Thanks for your help! It’s not until May but with how my semesters go, I’ll forget about it until it’s time to leave for it! I know it’s ship dependent but I was just curious as an overview

Question 1: In general, a very wide variety, and not only fried food. I’ve been able to keep carnivore on every Disney Cruise. I’ve only sailed on the original 4 ships, of which there are 2 smaller ones and 2 larger ones, and the larger ones have steak for breakfast every morning, to give perspective. The smaller ones don’t have the steak, but still smoked salmon, omelet stations, eggs and meat in a variety of ways, etc. Lunch always has a carving station with some sort of fresh meat. There’s lots of fruit, veggies, etc. But they also keep a constant supply of classics/kid friendly food (chicken fingers, mac n cheese, and pizza). There is also poolside food service, which always includes burgers, dogs, pizza chicken strips and fries, and then depending on your ship it could have a gyro station, a taco bowl station, a sandwich shop, etc.

For question 2: delightful. I’ve been on other cruiselines and I always say I have more adult experiences on Disney. It’s because the kid’s clubs are so well done that the kids WANT to be there, so they aren’t in the adult spaces causing chaos. My wife and I love going to music trivia and other activities.

For question 3: It’s still hit and miss. For being a free app, you get your moneys worth, but you ARE able to communicate with it. The biggest issue is that it doesn’t notify you when you have a message: it’s on you to check. But the app IS awesome when it comes to itinerary, because it displays everything happening on the ship and you can build your own schedule. It also features the menus for dinner for every night you are there, so you can be a little strategic with your meal selection, if you know you have a big dinner coming up or if nothing looks particularly excellent.

I’m afraid I’m not quite understanding question 4. Could you rephrase.

And dude: I’m doing a cruise in May on Disney…do you know the date? It’d be wild if we’re on the same ship.

Its the Fanasty on that leaves on the 24th!

Yeah of course! I found some old basic itineraries of the past cruises (like when arriving or leaving places). I was looking for a list of all the past events and stuff to do sorted by day for the cruise. Not sure if that’s a thing but I was just curious to see what exactly has been offered and had been going on in the past

Also, thanks for the replies! That helps a lot. It’s my first cruise in a long time and my girlfriends first. We are both planners!

Ah, we’re going to be on the Destiny a little later in the month. But I’ll be thinking of you!

Ah, I can give a brief overview of mainstays to look forward to.

Every cruise has a pirate night, that includes fireworks at sea. If you guys are into pirates and dressing up, pack pirate costumes. People get WAY into it. There is a deck party, pirate themed activities on the ship, the whole shebang. Similarly, 7 night cruises all have a formal night, so if you’re into dressing up, pack your tux.

There is a sailaway party on the deck on the first day. It’s right after the muster drill. Good way to settle in. Also, the lunch served at Cabanas on the day you board the ship has lamb chops. It’s the only time they’re featured, and they’re incredible. Be sure to get some. The carving station also has turkey (I always get a drumstick) and carved roast beef: worth getting.

There’s going to be at least 3 big shows in the evening: 1 musical based off a disney classic (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Frozen, etc), a variety show (typically on the first night) and an original (typically around the final night). They’re worth seeing for a first time. You’ll most likely want to show up as soon as the doors open to get good seats. You won’t need to be as early for the other shows they offer: they don’t get to get as crowded.

There’s music trivia every night, if you’re into that. It’s organized by decade.

Oh yes, and just a hot tip: you’re never beholden to just 1 appetizer, entree, dessert, etc, at the sit down service. I will frequently order all the appetizers, and if there is an entree with a meat I like (like prime rib), I’ll ask for 3 slabs of the meat put on my plate. The staff is very ā€œget to yesā€

Time: 72 min with warmup

Snatch: Work up to 125x6 good reps in 1:22. Explanation later
Squat: Work up to 315x3, 295x3,2, 285x3,2,2
Bench: 225x6, 205x5
Sandbag extend-away: 250x6,4
SB to shoulder: 250x1

Notes:

  • Snatch. I banged out 3 reps without straps, got one more after dropping the bar, then had to put straps on, hit one, miss one, hit one, miss one. So that’s why it’s longed like that
  • Squats felt good. Adductors were tight and knee hurt going into session so I’ll take 315x3 solid reps. More room to grow
  • Decided to see if I could shoulder 250. I can. Even better now
  • Went to go to rugby practice last night. It’s cancelled for 2 weeks. Kinda annoying but it turned into a complete rest day
  • I think a cycle of good mornings with squat stance and bar placement would fix me
  • I tried to speed up this workout but these near maximal sets take it out of me
