Dogpile 2010

Catching up. That’s some serious bike riding. Trying to remember my formulas but off hand I’d say the O2 level in the air at 15k is only about 60% x sea level. The effects on the hemoglobin saturation level is even more drastic and below the normal functioning level. Acclimatization reduces but doesn’t eliminate the effects of high altitude activity. Are you riding alone? Not being preachy, just saying damn impressive.

7/5/2010
Bench Tr Max = 185
w/u Shldr rehab, barx10, 95x5, 115x5
Work sets 130x5(whoops!), 150x3, 170x9 (PR +3 over 6/7/2010)

Deadlift Tr Max = 365
w/u 135x5, 225x5
Work 260x3, 295x3, 330x6 (baseline PR)

I took yesterday off due to too much riding/beer/wine/little sleep on the 3rd and felt good today. So I doubled up on Bench and Deads but kept it to the basics. 9 reps at 170 was pretty much all I had but I probably could have done more than the 6 reps at 330 for my deads today. Everything felt pretty good at 6 reps so I’m satisfied. I’ll probably do the same on Wednesday for Squats and MP in order to go into the 3 day mountain bike trip this weekend mostly recovered. Hope everybody had a great weekend.

Thanks Harry - I’m not at 15kft so it’s a little better than that. The info I just found indicated that the partial pressure of O2 drops by 50% at 18kft and the decay curve is roughly linear between sea level and 18kft. So where I live at 9.5kft, I get about 75% of the O2 that you would at sea level. This coming weekend at 11Kft we’ll get about 70% of sea level. That should be “interesting” since I’ve never done any extended riding at that level.

I ride alone much of the time but most of these trails are relatively well traveled. I almost always see a few other runners/hikers/bikers. This particular ride I started out with a friend but we split up because he is in much better shape than me and wanted to do a longer ride. If I’m going out alone, I always tell my son son where I’m riding and when I should be home - just in case…

A +3 PR in just over a month! That is great! Deads are looking strong as well. Looking good, soldog. You’re gonna tear it up.

Oops! My bad. I read the 1574 as 15740 (old, need classes). Guess that didn’t make sense. Pikes Peaks only 14 something. I’m blushing with embarassment as I type this. Okay, forget what I wrote, carry on.

ok -somebody come get Harry he’s wandered off again! (j/k)

The 1574 was the cumulative elevation gain I did for the total ride. I use that as a gauge of difficulty. The ride happened between 7-8000 feet altitude

OK - I put up some progress pics a couple of years ago and just got to thinking about it again. In nearly 2 years I’ve gone from 179 to 213 and boosted my lifts from a non-existent bench due to rehabbing a should to doing 170x9 today, a 315 deadlift to an easy 385 and a shitty 185x5 squat to recent PR to depth of 295.

Be warned the next couple of posts are progress pics of a half naked, hairy, somewhat fat, bald guy…

Yeah, but up in THOSE hills, he is too close to the sun. 5 minutes and he’s fried.

Obvious thickening, soldog…especially in the shoulders and legs.

looking way more solid - nice shoulders.

Nice work George. You are progressing quite nicely.

7/7/10
Shldr rehab
MP barx10, 60x5, 70x5, 80x3
Work 90x3, 100x3, 115x11 (+4 over 3 weeks ago, but -2 over fall)

Squat Barx10, 135x5, 165x5
Work 195x3, 220x3, 250x7 (+1 over 3 weeks ago, matches high squats from 8 July 2009)

8 July 2009

I may have had one more squat in me but I’m satisfied with matching the reps from a year ago with better depth.

My son screwed up again yesterday evening and this time he could have killed himself and 4 friends. He says he swerved to miss a deer while going 35mph but the truck rolled over on the road and slid off the side breaking a power pole in two. 35 â?? yeah right! He totaled the truck and boys came out with only minor lacerations. Then I find out today that somebody filed a claim on July 5th for a fender bender that he says didn’t happen but they seem to have our insurance info and names. Can I lock him away for 2 years, please? I’m sending him to his mothers to work this weekend while I’m away on my high mountain back-country riding expedition. He won’t be driving my car anytime soon and when he does it will only be with me in the car.

I’m glad he and the others are okay. It’s sounding like if a car accident doesn’t kill him, you will.

squats are looking way better dog!

I love my son dearly and would never harm him. What you read is frustration. I am a very even tempered person face to face and, lest you get the wrong impression, just use this for occasional venting. Despite my years of Martial Arts (or perhaps because of), I have never been in a physical altercation worthy of being called a fight.

I know your pain well.

Someday I’ll have to share the time my son called me and said his car was in the Lake.
This was 9 months after he caused a 5 car accident and broke my wifes car in half.

He’s in Afghanistan now where its safer for him, and others around him. (Fixing helicopters not flying them)
The Army is one of the best thing he ever did, but it will be a long time before he admits it.
