Gym was weirdly packed at a time it’s normally empty so I had to make a modification - first real deviation from the program and kept intensity high with rest times low, so I couldn’t care less.
Do you have a tibialis machine or are you just putting plates on your toes or something? And I’m kinda skimming through this but have you been running at all lately? I’ve been running a little bit and am noticing, for the first time in my life, shin discomfort. I wonder if some tibialis work would help me out.
Yup. Tibialis machine, loading plates. You could do it with bands, or with strapping plates to your feet, or with a cable handle attachment. But this makes it really easy and lets you get a deep stretch into plantar flexion before contracting into dorsiflexion.
To your other question, I’m doing more hiking and very little running. Gonna start soon though.
Thanks man. I think I’ve said it before but your log/posts are honestly some of the most educational (at least for me) that I read. No big explanations or anything, just little passing comments about what you do/why you do it/how you do it, but they end up being awesome. Your consistency and work ethic are awesome too - really been a big motivator to me, personally, and I’m sure many other bro’s on here. Keep it up!
To me, because I think any mug can be a beast in the gym. It takes a very special dude to be a beast in the gym as well as an engaged dad, full time employee, husband and student.
@dagill2 thanks man. Got plenty of flaws like everyone else, but the idea that “Hard Work is Magic” has stuck with me for a while. If something is going badly, needs work, or you just want it to go well in the first place, work hard/harder - voila, magic. Applies to lifting, dadding, husbanding, schooling, and lots of other -ings.
Yesterday, I woke up and realized that when I’d taken the trash out to the backyard the night before, Alfie had followed me out to pee. So I woke up for work, couldn’t find him, and found him curled up on his dog bed outside! It wasn’t cold at all last night and he didn’t seem unhappy but I knew he’d been scratching at the door and just decided to sleep outside, so I felt terrible all day at work.
Consequently, I scrapped gym time and instead of his normal mile after work we did a 6 mile walk/run all over town. He got belly rubs from a few different strangers, we did sprints in the park. He deserved some extra love and I got my conditioning in.
Got my second vaccine dose this morning. Ft sluggish and pretty lightheaded so I just went in and hit my chest workout but took it easy on the assistance.
Bar, 95, 135, 185, 205, 225x5, 185 5x5 with assistance 1 and 2 for 10 reps in between each, alternating. Too lazy to type it out properly, hah.
Yup. @T3hPwnisher reported few side effects, but the jury’s out on whether or not he’s human. It’s a win-win for me personally - if I feel fine tomorrow, great, if I don’t, my immune system is putting in work.
Was falling asleep at work - 2nd vaccine shot hit me hard. Stuck it out and left after 8 hours, hit traffic and almost fell asleep at the wheel, and made it home and took a 45 min nap. Woke up, played with the kids and decided to try my deadlift workout.
Again, too lazy to write it out, but I’m gonna go back through in a couple days and edit posts to look proper.
Basically, bar, 150, 240, 290, 330, 380, 420x5, then 330 5x5 with assistance x10 in between each. I made it just under the time limit, but I was really struggling to not pass out right after each deadlift set. The first rep would go fast, and by the 5th I’d set it down and wouldn’t be able to stand up until my vision stopped blacking out.
Came home and made chicken teriyaki with a homemade teriyaki sauce and broccoli. Turns out teriyaki sauce is super easy - it’s just equal parts Sake, Mirin (a sweet rice wine) and Soy Sauce. Started by sauteeing ginger and garlic, and thickened it with a corn starch slurry after all the ingredients were added. The chicken was bone-in skin-on thighs that I deboned and cooked by themselves, no oil, until they were golden brown and cooked through, and then cooked the broccoli in the chicken fat from the skin with a splash of the teriyaki sauce. Dipped the chicken in the sauce and served with steamed rice.
Officially on vacation for the next 10 days. Heading to an AirBnB in Long Island with a hot tub for the next week to see family and relax. Just finished my A&P Cumulative Test. The long answers won’t be graded til next week, but gonna brag a bit, as this is my end-of-semester grade before it inevitably goes up:
You’re asking the wrong question. You need to be asking - “At what point is it not acceptable to work so hard?” - The answer being, the moment it becomes a detriment to your physical/mental well-being. As to your original question, it’s well past the point at which it was acceptable to not work so hard. Learning to not work hard is hard for naturally hard workers.
But in all seriousness, I’m glad to see a scenario that allows for backing off. When I saw that question, I really thought I was going to see a different answer.
I’m on vacation, hence the lack of activity - been doing a 2-3 mile run and 100 pushups daily. I’m in NY, so no gyms available. Brought my 50# KB and did 500 swings one day, but mostly just focusing on family.
