Lifter at my gym asked why I used clips even on my warm up set of bench. I think it’s just a habit of mine. Plus, it’s one less thing to worry about. It’s not like I need clips but it’s safer to lift with them.
But this jackass went as far as saying that it’s the same as using a smith machine because the clips are stablizing the weight for you or something like that.
Do you lift with clips?(bench, squat, deadlift, etc)
Why in god’s name are you talking to people at the gym?
dude came up to me while i was resting. he told me i didnt need to use them at all since i probably had the most perfect form on bench. so it was like a compliment mixed with a fagitry
I had a cheap clip explode on me once… took a piece right between the eyes and have a nice scar to show for it. Turns out that crinkling sound wasn’t the chrome plating fracturing, it was the clip itself.

To be fair, clip guy talked to him. He never said he responded to clip guy. Maybe he silently stabbed him with a clip.
Luckily, I find that wearing headphones + dressing like a hobo at the gym discourages other gym-goers from talking to me.
To answer the OP question, I ALWAYS use clips, even with silly weights. It is part of your self discipline, like re-racking the weights you’ve been using. You just do it.

Wear headphones and never make eye contact.
I train in a garage in below freezing temps to avoid the idiots.
always use them for any bb lift when there is more than one plate on each side even if its still a warm up, whats the point in risking injury for the 3 seconds it takes to put them on, the guy is an idiot, doesnt change how the lift is preformed yet makes it safer=win
I use clips on deadlifts because when I drop the weight it slides off the bar and it’s a bitch to move the weight back every damn time. Other than that, I’m not sure of much use for them in general training. If you tip the bar so much so that the plates fall off, clips aren’t gonna fix your imbalance and/or form. And if you’re in the middle of a lift and you fail, I’d want the option of letting the weights fly off as opposed to being crushed. Kinda depends what you’re biggest problem is while lifting I guess.
