I don’t use one.
I use my traps.
I used a pad once when I was a sophomore in high school, when I first started squatting.
Then someone told me man up, so I did. The end.
I wrap a towel around the bar cause thats what i’ve always done. I’ve never really considered it “pussy” or cared how it looks but i have a large penis so i don’t get insecure.
I do, however, squat on a bed of nails so its a wash.

Thought this thread was dead … but since it’s come back, I’ll add my 2c:
I never found the pad helped - just seemed to make the bar more unstable. When I’ve visited places that have that Manta Ray thing, I’ve found it quite useful, at least for a change: but not useful enough to want to buy one to use at home!

I agree. Same goes for straps, gloves and belts.
I’ll take it one further, if you wear clothing while lifting you’re a pussy. You know you’re squatting deep when your junk slaps the floor. It’s awesome!
Wow, such narrow mindedness is to be expected I suppose. Well I’ve been training for years and I use a pad. Granted, the normal ones kind of suck, I bought something called a “Squat Sponge” and I love it. I won’t brag with internet numbers, but I promise my squat/testicular fortitude is nothing to scoff at. Just because you do not use/agree with the use of a gym accessory, does not equate it with being “sissy”. Many of you would be benefited by growing and enhancing your thought processes vs just working on muscles.

I like what that dude said about getting a better squat with the bar directly touching your back as opposed to transfering through the pad. I think it makes sense. I’ve always used the pussy pad, even when I squat my bodyweight ass to grass 20x. I gotta try without it. Pussy pad is a good name.
Also, I think some people’s spines stick out more, so maybe some people could never do it pain free. Weightlifting should not hurt. Kill your muscles, don’t hurt you body.
I have stopped using the pad thanks to this thread and improved my squat. It rests a bit lower on my back which changed the muscle activation. I think that the direct barbell contact improved the feel. The pad seems to create a mild power cushion. I think the barbell being lower is the major factor.
My squat has definately gotten stronger and it feels much more comfortable now. FUCK THE PAD
