Do You Train Alone or With a Partner?

I like lifting alone because I’d rather be listening to my IPod to pump me up then a partner.

This thread is going voice of the forum for sure

I drink alone, but lift with a partner. Good for the lifts that need a spotter and I like the motivation energy we give each other.

I have to lift alone, I just cant get a good workout in with friends, you end up bullshitting too much. I am also always stressed for time so it just doesent work. To me there is nothing like lifting heavy to some great music. Its why I love lifting period, just you the weights and your goals. Unfortunately my gym also doubles as a social club so my quiet nature is construed as me being a douchebag, when Im not and would be gald to talk just not in between or during sets!

I get the impression walking into my gym, ‘here’s that arrogant prick who lifts heavy but talks to no-one’… but it’s also the only reason I’ve progressed and they haven’t.

There are other people like this though, and a simple nod is all the recognition needed.

I train with a partner, but I now outweigh him by 40 pounds. Oh well, I can warm up with his max, so that saves me from reloading the bar, right?

Really? I kinda like the “life or death” motivation, so I even take the pins out on the squat rack. If you hit that sticking point halfway up, your instincts will make it go up

Then again, I don’t go below triples on squat

Oh, so alone. Cuz no one else likes to work out right before bed.

To quote Lee Haney, “…if my training partner is not a plus for me, then I choose not to use one”.

I, like many others in this thread, train alone. I’ve went through 5 training partners in the past 2 years and it has done nothing but really waste my time because a lot of the time i’d have to wait for them. I just train by myself. I don’t use anything that really requires a spot so i’m good to go. You really can’t depend on many people to train consistently these days.

Testing your new 1RM on bench alone, at least when you’re beyond the 200’s, can be difficult.

You can always ditch a squat…a bench will titty fuck you against your will once your tricep gives.

Meh, just grab some random dude who looks like he won’t kill you and away you go on bench press.

Recently had more bad experiences with training partners who just complain and moan about the load, don’t want to do it, why are we doing more sets with that load, can we drop-set yet? You just get fucking sick of it.

That Lee Haney quote is becoming more and more prominent for me.

I need some nutty mofo from this site to train with. Can’t lift as heavy as most people here, but I guarantee I’d push myself just as hard as anyone and would be great to train with (unless you want a conversation, then I’d be terrible).

haha x2 you kill the weight or it kills you!

I train alone for the most part. I work nights so I usually hit the gym around 1:00 am on my off nights. The few people that do go to the gym at that time are there to lift though, so I can get a reliable spot pretty easy if I need one.

I train alone cus I don’t have that many friends, let alone friends that train like me (or at all). And I train without music (to facilitate strapping youngs lads to talk to me, however, they never do LOL!). C’est la vie.

Depends on where I’m training. If I’m at home, and usually deadlifting and doing legs, I’m alone, If I’m benching, I like to workout with my friends who play college football so I can put up the most weight safely.

I train alone at a couple gyms. I don’t like training with a ‘partner’, but I wish I had some more people around that I could get spots from on heavier bench attempts. The other thing is that my db shoulder presses are in the 100’s and I expend a lot of energy getting them up on my shoulders either cleaning them up or kicking them up.

Getting a spot for that first shoulder press rep to start from the top takes a lot of strain off my shoulders too.

If I have a spotter, I’m likely to go for an extra rep or two that I might normally not go for. It’s a sad state of affairs at my gym when I can’t even find anyone who can hand me a 100# db to press or that I’d be comfortable asking for a bench spot. God forbid getting a squat spot.

Well for my all of 4 weeks (lol) i have trained alone, i like it when the gym is quiet.

Trying to do a heavy lift when people are standing around talking about their weekend really annoys me

I have to get an I-Pod lol !

Yeah, that wouldn’t fly in my gym either.

Did you ever play with Lego’s as a kid?

You can spend 20 minutes looking for a black flat 6 piece, and pull your hair out, because you know you have like 12, but can’t find one.

It’s only once you start looking for the red 4 cube that you find your black piece.

Finding a boyfriend/girlfriend works the same way; you won’t find someone worth it until you stop looking.
