Do You Support a Military Draft?

Ahh, and I am FOR the draft and AGAINST welfare.

Isnt there something going on with the draft right now? Not letting that poor college sophomore enter it? Due to some SNAFU regarding a deal between the players union and the NFL?

I don’t support the idea of the draft. My grampa volunteered, my father and all his brothers did, I did, and my son leaves next month.

I know when I look at a guy in uniform I can respect him because he’s chosen to do a hard job for me, and the rest of us. I won’t be able to do that in the future unless draftees have to wear a different uniform or patch.

Not everyone in a neighborhood runs into a burning building. We let the guys that volunteered and were trained to do it go in there. We don’t generally get in shoot outs with bank robbers, we send the cops, also volunteers with training to take care of it. The military is no different.

I know when my son joined the Navy they weren’t just taking everyone like they did when I joined. They’re being picky because they can. If they want more people they could turn less of the volunteers away at the recruiting office. There is no need for a draft now, and I doubt there ever will be one unless our government chooses to go fight a war that the majority of us don’t support.

SteelyEyes,

But wouldn’t it be better to send in all the chickenshits to catch the first wave of bullets, so those brave enough to volunteer could finish off the the enemy that survives?

Edgar, those were some damn fine words brother! I couldn’t agree with you more. Thank you for articulating the truth. Your the man

Nope. The way we fight now doesn’t generally take a lot of guys but it takes good ones. The best way to lose a fight is send in the less able, less motivated guys first. You lose the element of suprise or shock value of a well placed and forceful attack. It’s like starting a fight with all that pushing and shoving instead of a punch to the face…a big waste of time.

SteelyEyes,

Fair enough. I guess I just hate to think of the cowards getting a completely free ride.

in the country where i was born - macedonia, there is a mandatory draft of everyone between 18-25. u have to show up, if u go to college, fuck grad school, u finish school u go to the army, then grad school. its a good system for a small country. ive always loved the army and i think its every persons duty to defend his family from those who intend to hurt them.
for those of you who dont know where macedonia is, its in the balkans, where a shit load of wars have been faught. i grew up seeing things that kids should not see, and ive seen civil war in my own country.
so to make this brief, a draft is BS. the rich are going to find a way to dodge it and the poor are going to go and fight/die so that those same rich bastards can get richer. i dont plan to die so that bush or his oil buddies can get richer. noone wins in war, everyone loses. and if you support the war so much, join the army, show your support by being there. i am sick of assholes supporting the war, calling liberals cowards, when they r doing the same thing. i am not attacking anyone on this forum, so please dont get offended. i am expressing my views. i also find it ridiculous how people seem to not mind americans dying in iraq for reasons that r fictional, for lies. how can u support someone dying?

Bazence

I don’t support someone dying…I support us kickin ass. If you have any doubt concerning MY credibility, PM me. RLTW

I think that everyone should serve in the military especially our political leaders. I question the convictions of most Americans. I find that most Americans are not willing to make the sacrifices required of them unless it benefits them directly. I include myself in this group. Other generations were not as selfish. It is sad that our generation will not stand up to the task. We will be remembered for what we do during these hard times.

Me Solomon Grundy

I got a 95% on my ASVAB and am damned proud to be enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as an infantry marine despite the fact that I could have done anything. I would never ever in my life want to serve with some punk who barely made it through boot because he was drafted. Only those who feel it is their DUTY to serve are the ones that should. However, I know many guys who are DAMNED fine Marines who only joined for the GI Bill; they have full intentions to re-enlist. The draft would be a disaster and would put the lives of good soldiers in jeopardy due to the incompetence in “troopdom” that a draft would likely create.

“Other generations were not as selfish”
B.S. Granted there are people willing to espouse beliefs against the war or draft and there are pacifists getting publicity, but this doesnt represent the majority of opinion in the US. We had to have a freakin draft for WWII. Was there ever a more just war, well okay, The ghan was probably as just or more as far as America is concerned. Anyway, my point, courage is a virtue and is definately an ideal not the norm, it takes someone putting a boot in the average guys ass to get them going in the right direction hence the draft for “Just” wars.

“Draftees would get good men killed”

Yah, if we dont train them. When your ass is on the line one tends to want to understand their training. They just dont have to enjoy it.

“I wouldnt be able to respect the uniform if the soldier was drafted.”

Okay. I kind of understand what you are trying to say, but well, you should do your best to rethink the reason for that. Draftees are human and their ass is just as killable as the next guy, and they are still fighting for what everyone else is fighting for, getting their ass home outside of a body bag. This reminds me of people that burn the flag…they dont realize they are burning the symbol of the ideal not the individuals who run the states or current foreign policy. The flag, the uniform, these are the ideals that represent life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Yes, the men that wear them can fall short, they have fallen short in the past and they will do so again in the future, but we cant lose sight of the ideal.

A personnel note…
Ill never forget the funeral for a Ranger buddy, I was the lead palm bearer and up to this point I had managed to remain as stoic as any tough SOB, then a little girl, maybe 7 or 8, stood up in the pew, looked me in the eye and saluted me…she didnt know who I was, that I wasnt half the man that lay in that coffin, she didnt care about that, would she have cared that I could have been draftee, no, she was so young yet understood the ideal. She took my hand and we walked down together…now see you got my ass all sentimental, and I havent had a single shot of Jack.

This is my two cents…people tend to suck and they usually fall short of our expectations, but lets not let them cloud the ideal.

I’m curious. If the US needs a draft, what does it need it for? Is the US going to embark on a total cleanup of the Middle East? Maybe a foray into North Korea? Maybe a huge permanent force sitting in Iraq and exerting influence on the region?
