Do You Alternate Your Deadlift Grip?

Never mind…Once I went out and put the bar in my hand I can see how that would work now.
Gripping the bar forces in a bit of rotation at the shoulder. Anatomically it makes sense once you have to actually hold the bar. I just never really thought about it. Duh.

Yeah, that’s one reason I like hook grip better. Mixed grip makes it feel like one shoulder goes lower than the other, resulting in torque on the torso.

Was deadlifting for the first time in almost a year today (I know I know it’s been too long) and I changed my grip to dbl overhand from a mixed grip and I can definitely say that my grip needs work. Dbl overhand limits my weight by almost 60 lbs compared to mixed. But I suppose in the interest of shoulder health/grip strength…

For a while I did right over, left under, never switched because it just felt real bad with right under, maybe because I pinched a nerve, or something along those lines, in my right trap, a little while ago. Started going double overhand and using straps, love it, in 2 workouts I went from 365 x 2 with one over one under to 365 x 7 with straps.

I am going to use the overhand hook grip with straps only when I have to (on the heavy sets).

How do you guys feel about the hook grip for deadlifting? I might start using it on my warmups to get used to it.[/quote]

It’s the only way to go, but don’t think it’s pussyish to file the callous on your thumb or you’ll be sorry when the damn thing rips open (speaking from experience here).

Make sure you roll your hand and set your arm before lifting or else it will fill like your thumb is being torn off.
