Do People Write Viruses Just for S--ts and Giggles?

Did someone just get a virus on their computer?

I know a few virus writers. Most of them are harmless. The ones they write exploit part of your memory. Create a file or 2 that infect other files so it can scan and find others to infect. Most of them are harmless. They just want to create a program aware enough to live. IE silicon based life.

Now were shit goes fucked up is when idiot writers do it for profit. There is no art. It becomes lets find a target use it how ever we can. Who cares how the end user suffers in loss of data or performance of the computer itself. These are self defeating virii

Self defeating virii will cause attention to be seen and there by get delt with by anti-virus or by system admins reinstalling the system. Ending in sometimes loss of data money and time and frustration by everyone. It also makes it harder for harmless writers to work cause there infection methods get detected and patched.

The idea of a good virus is to stay undetected like a ghost. And most good ones you will never know were/are there.

The new trend is to make modular virii that script kiddies use to figure out how to work. Let them do the leg work. Then take over the systems for bad purposes. There is a whole war going on every day on infected un-patched or non-updated mircrosoft(mostly) computers. Its kind of funny this is there lives but yes this is what they do.

Lesson here people is to update your computers. Not just the OS. But the software too. If your software is not legal well don’t complain about an infection or 2. You have to be smarter. Don’t go to shady websites and mindlessly click yes too see they latest hotties sucking on what ever. Also use an up to date anti-virus. And do scans…not quick but full system.

As a system admin I can tell you most infections can be avoided and normally its the fault of the end user doing something they should not be resulting in an infection. I know I have been infected it happens to everyone eventually.

haha that’s a good idea…my computer crashed from a virus so bad and I lost so much information on it. It’d be nice to have one computer just to keep data and files on it with no internet use so it doesn’t fuck up and the other to fuck around on.

Can you get viruses through online gaming? I’ve played online many times…counter-strike mostly never had problems.
Not as far as I know, but I’m sure anything is possible. If you use one computer just for gaming it’s probably going to stay safe unless you’re downloading torrents and such, which just increases the possibility for infection. I’m actually trying to stop ALL internet use on that computer unless it is directly gaming involved.

Some people write them for fun, but I imagine this is a small majority. Most viruses are for malicious intent of the author, for instance turning your computer into a slave that can be used for a DDoS attack, people who download child porn may remotely use your computer to download/store their collection so that they don’t get caught but you do, they may use it along with thousands of others to brute force their ex’s email password and hack their account, they might install a keylogger that will snipe your banking information when you type it.

Basically there’s many reasons why someone would write a virus beyond “just for fun”, but of course people still do it just to see if they can. For instance I thought I might like to try a self replicating virus that would copy-pasta itself repeatedly all over your computer and run, so that i fyou delete the original, there’s millions of copies elsewhere clogging your callstack. BAM think about hwo hilarious it would be to see that fuck someone you don’t likes computer up.
This about sums it up. Most malicious content is to use your computer to spam, or store illegal stuff (child porn) or to steal your private data (cc info ect.). Even if just one in several million responds to a phishing e-mail saying they’re your bank and you need to “verify” your account info, it would be worth it to the idiots that do that stuff.

Unless a certain game has GAPING security hole that’s very easily exploited, serious “hackers” and I use that term loosely to mean those that exploit systems for profit (steal data, take of your system to run spam servers, ect) aren’t going to bother. You’re just fine playing games. The biggest threat is not keeping your OS up to date and downloading files from unknown sites, opening e-mails/attachments from unknown people, ect.

I fucking hate viruses. That’s why I now only go on the internet when I’m using Linux or inside a virtual machine. It’s a bit of a hassle, but at least I don’t have to deal with backing up all my files and reinstalling the operating system.
Or you could just not be a typical internet retard who clicks things willy-nilly. “OMG I WON A MILLION DOLLARS?” “Oh wow my computer has a virus and this convenient web popup was nice enough to point it out, better click to fix it” etc.
It’s not that simple. I’ve gotten viruses when pop ups are disabled and I never click on stupid shit. I swear they just randomly pop up occasionally on windows computers. Antivirus softwares have never worked for me.

Another solution is to keep your files on one partition and your perating system on another partition, so that you can just reinstall it without losing files when you get issues.

3rd party software vulnerabilities are probably 2nd to just straight up non-updated windows system when it comes to liability for infection. Adobe and Sun run Flash and Java respectively, and it is better to run them as 3rd party programs; the problem occurs however when you can’t just use automatic update to update those because they aren’t from MS.

The huge recent virus (mbam, and all of it’s mutations) abused this, because if you use Windows Java it runs slower and isn’t nearly as good as Sun’s, but if you run Sun you run the risk of human error and not updating the software promptly enough.

Your last statement is spot on though: there is absolutely no such thing as ‘immunity’(other than maybe running a Linux shell because it’s not time effective to hack them?), so setting up preventative measures for data loss(partitioning your OS + your data separately) is great for if luck turns sour(someone had to be the first person mbam hit, there’s no database update for that guy).

Whats the deal with Mac’s not needing AV software?

Market share, not enough people use macs to make viruses worthwhile.

My friends who know their way around computers tell me that safari is the least secure browser, that’s why at hacker conferences where they pay people to test security macs always go down first.

Indeed, if Mac based PC’s ever get big enough (doubtful, since the reason for Apple’s success over the past 8 years is largely from their mobile products) then the company as a whole will have a lot to learn with regards to security and similar issues.

Microsoft has been through the worst of those already, other companies will still be making those mistakes.

get a mac haha

Or use linux, you can get viruses, but it’s highly unlikely.

who giggles with they shit?

or has a grin while eating shit?

Man, screw that mission.

Eset Smart Security + common sense = virus free life.
NOD32 FTW!!!11

amazing anti virus

Is writing a virus somebody’s fucking idea of a joke?
They do it for the lulz.

To any and all hackers, PM me and I’ll give you my sister’s phone number. By tomorrow morning you’ll have had your hole and the idea of making computer viruses will be the farthest from your mind.

You may have a couple of other viruses…but the cool kind that’ll let your other hacker buddies know you got that hole you all want so much.
