Mac vs PC

hi there,im a mac user… and i think they are much better than PC. theres something about the overall design that makes MACS more appealing. I just wanted to know if there are any PC users that discovered OSX and just loved it… And for PC users. Why do you think PC are better than Macs… all sort of criticism, feedback, comments will be great

I have never actually used a Mac so I am biased.

For Graphics design and everyday users Macs are probably more user friendly.

However, for my job (CAD/CAE) PCs are far superior to Mac’s.

I’ve heard it said that Mac’s are for people that don’t want to understand how their computer works.

Just my opinion.

I work on a PC and have a MAC laptop next to me. Use both all day. I absolutely despise the MACs. All of our macs run osx. And yes osx is incredibly better than OS9 or whatever, but they still suck. There’s no easy way to get things done. Everything is so drawn out, wasting clicks for ever task. At least macs now have a freaking mouse available with a scroll and two buttons.

we use mac at my work, but we still us OS9 its actually OS10 but we run it in classic mode because alot of our programs won’t run in 10. Your right they are better for graphics which is what I do but they are abit complicated with all the clicking. All in all I like different things about each platform but if I had to choose I would take the mac.

It love that Microsoft and Intel has competitors, and I’ve allso heard a lot of great saying about it from graphical designers. MAC users argue it’s better then Windows in every possible way. But for a general purpose like a home computer? I mean, would you buy a car that only could drive 5% of the roads?

I am actually a long time PC user that recently switched over. Went with a new 15" Powerbook. I share much of the gripe of PC > Mac and the whole “not understanding how your computer works”.

In many ways Macs are much easier to use… MUCH. My dad is a long time programmer, he actually was one of the startups at Merril Lynch. If you’ve all seen Office Space, he was there when one of the programmers tried the same half-penny hack that they allude to (and eventually use).

So, I actually grew up on a Toshiba w/ the orange screens. And then a Toshiba with the black and white 9" screen. He programmed in Basic. Not even Visual Basic.

I grew up programming from an early age and never wanted to let Windows go. But I think one of the things that killed Microsoft was the lawsuit which separated Office and Windows. That is where I feel that my new Mac has some prowess. The programs integrate so much better with the OS.

Surprisingly, Office is the number one selling Mac software and actually functions better on my Mac than it ever did on my PC.

Other minor things like the ability to turn any file into a PDF and little tricks make it a great machine to work with.

Now that I have owned a Mac I have the same assessment.

If you don’t know what you can do with a PC over a Mac then get a Mac. Really.

I love Windows and yes I will miss the little side programming that I would do, but the truth is I have fallen behind in the language and it might be time for me to just retire to being a computer user. Sad to say at 20.

My biggest gripe is that my training software that I used to analyze my training data (Heartrate, Recovery Rate, Cadence, Outputs, Thresholds, etc) doesn’t run on a Mac. So I am stuck back in old school training methods, but that can be a good thing.

Also, I think Apple is in a great position right now to really take over the market share. Microsoft is about 1-2 years out from their next OS, which means that more and more peopel are going to be switching to Macs. Especially with Mac switching over to Intel chips.

I think Microsoft dropped the ball by allowing such a big window. There is a chance Apple will release 2 operating system revisions unopposed. Really Windows hasn’t had a major revision since 95 (that the average user could comment on)

Wow. This is pretty one-sided so far, so I’ll throw in my bit.

I’ve used PCs and Macs for quite a few years now, and there isn’t a single thing that I can’t do faster and better on my Mac.

I take that back, watching streaming video with Windows Media Player and Real Player is better on a PC. That’s an important point for the huge portion of consumers for whom the terms “computer” and “porn-viewer” are synonymous. I’m not one of them.

These days, it mostly comes down to personal preference. For my time, the Mac user experience is too good to pass up–at least if Windows is my other option.

Please give up on the the whole “Macs are good for graphics people” thing. Man is that tired. Macs are good for anyone who wants an excellent computer experience. That is, Macs are just fine for general computer needs. (Hey, Excel works in Macs? Only if your spreadsheet has graphics.)

I have used both fairly extensively and at the end of the day I always go back to my PC. I think when one becomes proficient on both platforms they both basically become the same thing in terms of productivity. OSX looks MUCH nicer than windows (although you can get programs to make that not the case). I don’t particularly care for 1 button, no scroll wheel mouse, but I hear that is changing as well… which it should have 7 years ago. All-in-all I dont REALLY think it matters which one you go with. I have had just as many problems on the Mac as I have the Pc so that is it a moot point to me.

i don’t use a mac because you can’t in the business world if your company doesn’t use them without a great deal of hassle. And after all the work to convince the boss that he should fund a computer that an IT guy won’t know how to fix when it breaks (everything eventually breaks) for something that may or may not work any better.

The end of it all is that its just not that important for me to make a switch over. I’ve used both.

It’s pretty much gotten to the point where both are equally capable. All of Mac’s prior shortcomings have been solved, so it’s all about preference.

Before I got a laptop, I would use the computer labs at uni. There were pc labs and mac labs. It was always hard to get a pc so sometimes you’d have to use a mac.

Macs are singlehandedly the most frustrating pieces of shit I have ever had the misfortune of having to use. Everything about them is seemingly designed to piss me off. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH A CDROM THAT EATS YOUR FUCKING CD AND THEN FREEZES THE COMPUTER SO YOU CAN’T GET IT BACK. JUST GIVE ME A FUCKING BUTTON YOU CHICKEN SHIT MICKEY MOUSE MOTHERFUCKER. Nothing gave me greater pleasure than bashing macintosh computers. There is something intensely satisfying with taking that stupid keyboard and just fucking punching the bastard.

Perhaps I haven’t given enough effort into learning how to use a mac properly. Perhaps at 22 I am old and curmudgeonly, however I don’t care. I hate macs, and I hate the people who go on about how superior they are and how stupid PC users are. Oh and IPOD’s are shit too. Ooh it’s the new IPOD (and yes it’s got video). WOW welcome to 1994, congratulations. My I-River makes me so very very happy. I hate the trendy trendoids who buy Ipods too.

Macs are the ultimate in style over substance. They represent everything that is wrong with society.

Oh and OSX is the most ridiculously hard thing to get a hang of. You spend a ridiculous amount of time learning how to use it, only to find out that in the end it has absolutely no redeeming factors whatsoever.

When I want a music festival, I’ll go to Big Day Out in Sydney Australia. When i want a computer, I’ll go with a pc.

Are you okay buddy?

I have a 5 year old neice that operates a Mac.

You sir just might be borderline retarded.

I highly doubt that a true Mac user represents everything wrong with Society.

Majority of PC users use PCs because EVERYONE ELSE DOES and they are scared to venture into something that might just be different. Windows is the epitome of capitalism. Apple is following right behind but please… everything that is wrong with society?

And XP is so much simpler right?

Do you even know how to utilize the functions on XP that are apparently not there in OS X?

And Spotlight makes everything at the reach of a shortcut key.

I am a very proficient PC user but when it gets to the point where your cell phone that runs on Pocket Windows gets Viruses… thats just plain old enough for me.

And blah blah about firewalls and virus software. I had it worked and updated about 2x a day. On college campuses its nearly impossible to get around that system. My f-in cell phone freezes now whenever I try to answer it.

Yes you are right, you are clearly an intelligent person. I respect your programming skills and your proficiency with macs. To tell you the truth it does keep me up at night. I mean, if I have spent time using macs, learning them, and I still hate them, and they are still a piece of shit, then there must be something wrong with me right? Oh woe is me, if only my father knew how to program in basic, then I could be cool too.

What was it I said before about mac zealots? I never said anything about you and you felt the need to call me retarded. Way to break the stereotype.

Like I said, I can use a mac, I understand the mac. I just consider it to be a terrible terrible waste of time, and despite the wonderful success stories of yourself and your 5 year old neice, I don’t think they are god’s greatest gift to mankind.

Capitalism is a good thing by the way. Microsoft aren’t the epitome of capitalism, they are the epitome of Microsoft. Besides, that’s an argument for linux users, not mac users.

My argument had nothing to do with business ethics, it was to do with brand name zealotry and fashion. Macintosh design is an analogy for the trendy conformism that I hate. If you are too much a product of that materialism to understand my perspective, that is fine.

It must suck to hate the world man.

Damn.

I was planning on getting a Powerbook this fall but then heard rumors of the Intel pbooks possibly coming out in January.

I think Ibook might be coming. I just got the latest Rev of the PBook

15" w/ a 7200 drive. Runs FAST. Dropped the DDR2 ram to 2GB too and I hook it up to a 23" display.

Best purchase. I say wait for the 2nd Rev PBook if you want Intel. But the current PBook is still a GREAT buy. Esp with the 7200

Actually I have to say it feels really good. Especially right now.
