I dare anyone to put a side-by-side photo of Olivia against Arnold and tell me that Arnold should have beat him. Arnold was a better politician and more charismatic…but just going by the body? Olivia IMO.
IMO Arnold looked better at the 1972 Mr.Olympia.

Now, maybe it’s that picture that’s doing it (and I want everyone to know I am a HUGE arnold fan)…but, Arnold was known and admitted he’d turn a bit to make his waist look smaller and his shoulders/lats wider…
But you could take that picture of Oliva and split in in half, mirror it and it’d look the same, the guy was so symmetrical!

no doubt about the waist, sergio has a smaller waist then arnold and it’s clearly visible. however arnolds arms are larger and more defined his chest is thicker.
sergios back appears a bit wider although it’s mostly due to his smaller waist but arnolds back still holds its own and his lat insertion points are lower. Quads seem to be equally defined and calves seem to be equally sized. however and i will find a pic, arnolds hams and calves are better developed just give me a sec.
My point was, Arnold was a great bodybuilder in his own right, and Sergio losing to Arnold and Arnold losing to Sergio would be nothing for either of them to be ashamed about.
Actually Olivas arms were bigger than Arnolds. Arthur Jones measured both of them. Oliva was the first bodybuilder to have 20 inch arms. Arnold had shorter muscle bellys so his biceps looked peakier. Olivas quads were bigger. Olivas back was bigger even Arnold admitted that that he got intimidated by it at the 71 Mr O.
It would be intersting to see a pose off between between Oliva, Arnold and Zane today. I think Oliva would look the best.
One more point. Arnold today is a household name. But only poeple who follow bodybuilding know who Oliva is. That was kind of the point of the commercial.
As such it is a great commercial in that it put Olivas name out there, for people to have some idea of who he is. Anyone who does a google search and sees them side by side is going to say to themselves Holyshit he’s friggin huge.
I kind of thought the commercial was suppose to be flattering, meaning that even though Sergio was built like a mother fucker, and one of the best the sport has ever seen… No one in the public knows him because he came in second.

I take that back, they look equally matched in the hams and calves. i still feel arnolds overall development and definition was better.
For what it’s worth
My summary
arms: arnold
taper: sergio
chest: arnold
back: sergio
delts: arnold
legs: tied
overall: arnold
i see how it could’ve gon either way though.[/quote]
I’ve seen a bunch of pics, but no film (is there any film?) so this is all supposition based on various “peaked” pics from that time.
arms: I can see Arnold…his bread and butter
taper:? you mean V taper? Sergio but their overall abs are comparable
chest: Oak by a mile
back: Please, serg.
delts: split IMO. I think Sergio’s are rounded a bit more and he shows them well
legs: ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Serg has that nice squared lateral quad…admittedly I’d have to see some more ham shots but his side hams pics have a nice split
hahaha I noticed you left out calves: check out the tibialis anterior on serg…or side or rear shots…Serg by a mile
Granted it’s all just aesthetics and guesswork on our parts debating it 40 some odd years later…oh, and I’m a big Arnold fan, he’s definitely in my top 3 all time favorites.
