The only problem I have with allowing pros to compete is it literally tears away any chance a young amateur has at winning.
Talented young fighter with a stellar amateur career looking to put the cherry on top before he goes pro? His dream gets cut short when he gets into the ring with a P4P top 5 fighter who is not only the same kind of talent, but has about 10 years of professional experience on top of it.
Absolute slaughter.
Then again I suppose the point can be made that pros on that level have no real incentive to compete in the olympics, they’d make more money off their fights and endorsement deals already.
The point of the Olympics is to find the best. Not the best newbie. THE BEST. On a similar note, I do not support the decision to disqualify the racist chick from Greece because how nice she is has nothing to do with her skill.
Yep. And that’s all well and good until you stop to consider what it means for a young fighter wanting to get this career off the ground.
You start letting the Floyd Mayweathers compete and murder the competition and boxing promoters don’t want a bar of the losers, and then a young fighter has to struggle that much more to launch his career. Talented fighters stuck on shitty undercards of shitty local promotions.
That doesn’t help boxing one iota, it just hurts it.

At the same time though you get people going around claiming to be the best when the real champs weren’t allowed to compete.
