Boxing people are used to this shit. Its almost commonplace throughout the sport. Its 100% worse at the olympics because they score tags not solid punches. Olympic boxing is just no good.
Maybe some of the older guys can tell me but was it ever good? Did olympic boxing way back actually have prestige and solid competition?
I’m not an older guy but I do remember in the '72 or '76 olympics a little Cuban guy beat the crap out of some American. My parents were outraged when they gave the match to the American. I can remember the Cuban guy crying in disbelief. I can’t speak of prestige and competition but the corruption existed even in the 70’s.

what is almost as amazing, is how little press coverage this is getting. an obvious and pretty much PROVED fix, and it is NOT the leading story in any sports section of any media outlet?

The announcer said it at the end - this is why people consider the sport a joke, and it’s a big reason why nobody covers it. Why bother?
Boxing needs to clean its act up before anyone gives a shit about it anymore - and the Pacquaio - Bradley fiasco destroyed its reputation, and this just worsens it.

Agreed, but it is a full court press of shitty.
Under different circumstances you might expect the pro’s to not constantly fuck up and this would be a case of “screw the amateurs” watch pro boxing. Coaches could basically train/teach towards pro rules and the international amateur competition would be marginalized(with the end of the cold war it already has to a degree. It isn’t like there are 3 Cubans and 2 Russians that we think could beat Mayweather. They all turn pro anyways.)
Or, conversely the Olympics could highlight “real” competition.
Instead we get a race to the bottom.
You know what cheers me up about it. It isn’t my job to cover the fights and try to act like there is dignity involved.
Could some one explain to me why there is a fixation on getting amateurs into the olympics? I thought the Olympics were about crowning the best person in the world at the sport.
This blatant match fixing is pathetic, they have proof that large sums of money were paid to the AIBA plus they have witnesses describing the transfer as a cash for olympic golds purchase. Yet no one shuts these assholes down or punishes them in any way.
Worse yet think if the Japanese fighter had not solidly knocked him down so many times then this would have been given to the other fighter with little thought as to it being fixed because boxing fans are used to judges fucking up the decisions.
There has always been corruption at the Olympics it’s just that in certain sports it’s more obvious.
And the IOC never likes to admit when it is wrong. Just look at female track records: they were almost all set in the 80’s when we know that women were heavily abusing drugs. They tighten up the protocols and suddenly women are slower. But they won’t throw out the old records or have some sort of “do over.” Maybe the statute of limitations is up to strip medals but they can erase the records.

It certainly seems that way.
Let us just take solice in the fact that no matter how badly the IOC shits on boxing, FILA shits on wrestling, or the IJF shits on Judo they are still way cooler than synchronized swimming or that thing the gymnasts do with the ribbons.

Bullshit! Did you see that crazy sexy chic in pink play with that ribbon a few days ago? I, My brother, my bro’s father in law and all our wives were dropped jawed gawking at her hotness. I’ll take an hour of that over the messed up shit I saw in that fight any day!

Damnit.
I missed that. Instead I was treated to the men’s gymnastics, including the floor routine.

Men’s gymnastics is super impressive, those guys are probably the best athletes on the planet, don’t be a hater.

My point was that humble and family got to watch a jaw droppingly hot display, and I got dudes…so perhaps I chose poorly?
I get that at least some of the athletes in every event are phenomenal and the pinnacle of physical prowess. That is why I don’t get events like synchronized swimming. I recognize it is likely incredibly difficult and takes a degree of practice, precision, and discipline I have never had. All of that to not drown in unison with 7 of your closest friends.

Speaking of this, WTF is up with Judo banning shooting takedowns? Japanese getting butthurt losing to wrestlers from PSU at Judo?

I think it had more to do with Mongolians using doubles and singles at the international level than any US judoka doing well. At least that was my impression when it happened.
For better info we should probably light the…(What the fuck is that thing in zerocharisma’s avatar anyway? Every time I see it I think that Grimace from McDonald Land had forced congress with Smeagol from Lord of the Rings.)signal.
Anyways, time to light the signal since this is a judo question.
Also:
I think I saw what you did there, but I am going to ignore it for 10 years.
Apparently they banned it to focus on throws. I’m guessing to differentiate it from freestyle wrestling. Seems to be a sucky rule, cos there were a few questionable disqualifications, seemingly for pants grabbing, that were announced as “Safety breaches” (see the 57kg women’s Gold medal match).
Didn’t stop that Mongolian dude. He got a silver at 100kg this Olympics.

The only problem I have with allowing pros to compete is it literally tears away any chance a young amateur has at winning.
Talented young fighter with a stellar amateur career looking to put the cherry on top before he goes pro? His dream gets cut short when he gets into the ring with a P4P top 5 fighter who is not only the same kind of talent, but has about 10 years of professional experience on top of it.
Absolute slaughter.
Then again I suppose the point can be made that pros on that level have no real incentive to compete in the olympics, they’d make more money off their fights and endorsement deals already.
The point of the Olympics is to find the best. Not the best newbie. THE BEST. On a similar note, I do not support the decision to disqualify the racist chick from Greece because how nice she is has nothing to do with her skill.

Yep. And that’s all well and good until you stop to consider what it means for a young fighter wanting to get this career off the ground.
You start letting the Floyd Mayweathers compete and murder the competition and boxing promoters don’t want a bar of the losers, and then a young fighter has to struggle that much more to launch his career. Talented fighters stuck on shitty undercards of shitty local promotions.
That doesn’t help boxing one iota, it just hurts it.
