Dinosaur Training, anyone?

Greg, thanks a lot! I’ll be heading to an army surplus store (duffel) and Lowe’s (sand and bags) this weekend. My wife already thinks my 1-arm snatches are interesting - wait 'til she sees this! Damn, this is going to be fun/brutal.

Alright! I couldn’t wait for the weekend, so I purchased my army duffel and 200 lbs. of sand tonight. I made (2) 25-lb. bags and (1) 50-lb. bag. I have (2) more 50’s that I haven’t “prepared” (see Greg’s post above). Anyway, making the 25 lb. bags will now allow me to work in any 25 lb. increment from 25-200 lbs. In addition, since the army duffel is so thick, I can just throw in some of my wife’s smaller DB’s (wrapped in a towel or something) in there for even smaller increments. Anyway, I loaded it with 100 lbs. and cleaned it to my forearms several times. I couldn’t get it from my forearms to just my hands, though. Is that something I should work on? I FINALLY got 100 lbs. balanced enough to press once, after several tries. Then, I walked around my yard with it on each shoulder for 2 minutes. To all those still reading my long post, I was hoping you could recommend a “sandbag workout” I could do. It would be very appreciated! Thanks again, Greg, for your help.

http://www.nasgaweb.com for highlands. If you do a web search on worlds strongest man competitions you can find web pages there.

Jeemy, you could try buying this book sold by Ironmind called Rock Iron Steel by Steve Justa which covers training with odd implements, especially barrels. The exercises in his barrel lifting course can be substituted with sandbags…For example…he recommends doing barrel squats with a barrel on one shoulder for 50 reps and then switching to the other side…also things like a barrel bear hug and hold…can explain more if you’re interested.

Thanks a lot!

Experienced dinosaurs, What is a good starting point. Do you suggest starting out with regular weight lifting do you mix them up and do both? Do you just hit it hard and heavy? What nutritional information do you follow? Sorry for all the questions but this is fascinating to me and I want to get into it. I would like to start out right now weider into it.

Two options. FIrst is to just put a sandbag movement in with your regualr workout. Other option is to do a sandbag-only workout. Here’s a sample of the later. Sand bag clean and press. When you can’t press anymore, sandbag shoulder and squat (heave sand bag to right shoulder, stand up, then do a squat. Unload sandbag and repeat on left shoulder). DO this for some reps. Then bearhug sandbag and walk. Lower back should be fired after this. Then you can do something like turkish getups *lie on floor, put sandbag on chest. Now stand up without sandbag touching floor). Repeat a few times. Die.
Be careful with sanbags because they force you to lift with a rounded back position. So go slow and go easy to start.

Greg

Get the book (Dinosaur Training). Best way is to read that. SHould answer all your questions.

Cool ordered it from Iron mind I should have it in short order. I will give it a read and a go. Sounds like hellahard work but sounds fun. I am sure I will have questions later. Thank you very much Greg.

What size Army duffel bag would you recommend for use as a sand bag? The surplus store in my area carries a few different sizes.

Buster, depends how much weight you want inside. If the bag is too tight, it kind of defeats the purpose. I’d go larger than smaller. Makes it harder to control/lift, which is a good thing. You can always take up the slack with duct tape.

Take a look at www.mastiffstrength.com
They sell thick bars, stones, logs and about anything you want them to make they will.
I have trained this way with a few alterations for the better part of 14 years and it does work…
I would sugest doing a finishers after each session…farmers walks, log clean and press, sand bag carry-cleans-deads-sqauts, pushing the car…it is great for just general shape.
Here is one for you get a empty beer keg and bust out the tap …fill it with just water, sand, both, add lead shot…carry it clean it press it…it will kick your butt!

Here is tonights session...deads-1x8,1x20..fromnt squats1x15.. seated log press 2x6-10,reverse grip chin 2x6-10,dumbell power cleans1x10,thick rack incline1x10,dips 1x10 all sets will be too failure and I will foloow that up with sand bag carry for 600 ft with a 220 pound bag..this whole ordeal will last no longer than 40 minutes! I do this for about 6-10 weeks or untill it quites working and then rotate to higher volume....or heavy heavy weights...use everything to keep it fun! I also train just event(strongman stuff) on the weekend...I tried walking with 400 in each hand this weekend in the farmers walk and lets just say three steps...it was very heavy!
