Diet Not Working?

I could use some help/advice. I just turned 16, and three weeks ago I had my pheonix moment and decided to work on transforming my body. I had already been doing high intensity weight lifting 3 times a week, but I decided to add a mile and a half of cardio every day. Also, I eliminated all junk food from my diet and replaced it with healthy food and plenty of protein. Yet as I took measurements this morning, I was thoroughly disapointed. These are the results I have had:

2/17/08

Weight: 209.2 lbs.
Waist: 37 in.
Chest: 39 in.
Bicep: 15 in.
Upper Leg: 25.5 in.

2/24/08

Weight: 207 lbs.
Waist: 36 in.
Chest: 38.5 in.
Bicep: 15 in.
Upper Leg: 23.5 in.

3/2/08

Weight: 210 lbs
Waist: 37 in.
Chest: 40 in.
Bicep: 15 in.
Upper Leg: 26 in.

These results just don’t seem to add up right, especially the increace in leg size. Comments please?

The time frame between your first and most recent measurements is only two weeks. You should not be expecting drastic changes during that short of a time period. Also, fluctuations in water weight can skew measurements a decent bit. Just stick with it and I’m sure you’ll see results.

P.S. Giving more information regarding your training and diet will enable readers to give you better feedback.

P.P.S. Congrats on making the decision to commit to a healthy lifestyle. Keep with it and you won’t be disappointed.

I wasn’t expecting a drastic change, and I know the scale lies, but the thing that surprised me the most was that my waist actually increased.

As far as lifting, it’s a low rep heavy weight program. Monday is Bench and Squat, Wednesday is Hang Clean and Deadlift, and Friday is Bench and Squat again. Along with those, I do a no rest machine circuit every day.

As for my diet, I completely eliminated all junk food and increased the amount of vegtibles and protein I eat. The main courses are basically the same, eggs or Special K for breakfast, Whole grain turkey wrap and salad for lunch, and some sort of meat/fish with vegetables for dinner. For snacks it’s mostly fruits.

I also take 100% whey protein post-workouts. Can that have any negative effects?

People have told me, “Don’t drink protein it’ll make you gain weight” but I have no idea how credible that statement is, even though i’m leaning toward not at all.

It will make you gain muscle weight. As for your waiste, you might just be water bloated, if you’re eating a calorie defecit you will lose weight.

So no chance of protein making you fat?

Too much of anything will make you fat, even protein.

Well I don’t use exessive amounts of it, just 20-40 grams after a work out.

There are several beginner stickies that you should read. Please do so ~ and no if your just doing a shake after workout, that isn’t the reason why your waist got bigger.

Finally do not ever take advice again from the person that stated protein shakes are bad for you. See Chicken, Steak, Filet Mignon, Shrimp, Beans, Salmon, Tuna, and other fine sources of PROTEIN. Take time to eat more solid food.

Your overall diet every single day consistently + consistent exercise + consistent sleep = your progress.

Reminder : At the top of the Beginner Forum are stickies that will lead you to several educational links that should give you the basics to nutrition and exercise, and stress foundational knowledge.

Overkill.

Overkill.

Remember to do all measurements first thing in the morning, post piss.

Yeah, pick a day in the week to weight yourself. I do it Sunday morning after a loooong piss. Strip down to your underwear and get on the scale.

Sometimes I’ll weight myself Saturday morning and again on Sunday. From that I get a ballpark figure.

Once I went on a drinking binge and the next morning took a big piss and was completely dehydrated. Well, my weight dropped a pound or so. Water can seriously make things fluctuate.
