Diet and Macro modification while on GLP-1

I’m all,

I’m currently 1 injection into a GLP-1 prescription for fatty liver. My doc put me on this for elevated liver enzymes and fatty liver on abdominal ultrasound. I was surprised since i thought i had my nutrition dialed in and i’m in the gym 5 days a week.

Anyway, i wanted to ask if other who are training and trying to gain mass have had to start GLP-1 and how did it affect you training/gains? Any specific nutritional adjustments/tip&tricks?

Obviously i want to get rid of the fatty liver for my long term health (my doc says its reversible and will only be on it for a few months) but i’m really concerned about losing the gains i’ve made so far (1.5 years training)

Would appreciate your thought..

What GLP1 are you on? Dose?
Your gonna have trouble eating enough to gain much muscle.
AS far as losing muscle you’ll be fine as long as protien is up and your continuing to train.
People that lose muscle on GLP typically do not work out.
Assuming by tour username you are natty?

I’m on Mounjaro 2.5 mg .. according to my doc’s protocol I’ll be doing bloodwork and possibly an abdominal US every month to monitor my liver. Every month the dose gets bumped up by 2.5mg .. so next month I’ll be on 5mg. This will go on until my liver enzymes normalize.

As long as I wont lose muscle I’m happy .. because your right I am natty and I’m 41 years old, so any muscle I lose I’m gonna have to bust my ass to get it back ..

I’ve considered hoping on some gear just to make training effort a bit easier, but every time I remember the potential side effects I just chicken out.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Make sure you take enough protein, train like you did to get the muscle you already have and you should be fine, especially since its a temporary thing. Maybe just add a caffeine based pre-workout if you start feeling tired in the gym since you might not be eating enough carbs.

You might not experience the appetite-suppressing effects until you reach a higher dose. But if it becomes an issue, I’d grab some casein hydrolysate. It’s not like drinking a thick protein shake, and it’s probably the best muscle preserver.

If your liver enzymes are going in the right direction and appetite control is not a concern I would stay on the lowest dose possible. More is not better. Lower dose glp1 have shown great benefit at low dose longer term.
Don’t let the doc steer the ship too much.

Great advice guys .. thank you
I’ll update in a few weeks and let you know how its going

I assume it’s not alcohol related, correct? What’s was your A1C, fasting glucose, and fasting insulin?

No its not alcohol related .. I don’t really drink except in some social events. Hba1c was 5.4 did not do insulin levels but fasting blood glucose was 5.4 mmol/L

I re-did liver function tests a few days ago and the numbers are improving thankfully.
