The quote was made in 1968 while supporting striking Sanitation Workers in Memphis.

However, you are right…the quote was delivered just prior to his assassination (but in Memphis in 1968).

Thank you, Mufasa. I was EXHAUSTED from work when I put in the year 1963. I have edited my post accordingly. Glad you enjoyed the quote as well.

What a voice:

I can’t believe nobody has mentioned moon the loon yet! One of the most phenomenal drummers ever. R.I.P

Ahhhh…!

You reminded me, ascshotput…

The amazing Sam Cooke…shot at age 33 under still disputed circumstances…

Mufasa

…and of course Marvin Gaye…killed at age 45 by his father…

Mufasa

Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye

“…Ain’t Nothing Like the REAL thing, Baby…”

You also can’t mention Marvin Gaye without mentioning Tammi Terrell.

She died at age 24 of a brain tumor…but not before her and Marvin Gaye made a series of hits that last with us today.

Her death sent Marvin Gaye into hiatus and depression. When he emerged, he released some of the best music of his Life.

Question for you guys:

Without seeming too philosophical and/or religious, a lot of these peoples lives were FAR from being “wasted”.

Some made contributions that have Lived on long after their Deaths…

Thoughts?

(P.S. You guys are GREAT!)[/quote]

Jim Croce definately wins that award. He sold far more records and had #1 hits for years after his death. He had recorded so much music that when died the record company and his family released albums year after year.

Jerry Garcia, who would ever thought he would die a junkie…

Dave Torbert - New Riders of thePurple Sage

The ever volatile Sid and Nancy

Lyrics written for River Phoenix:

Young and strong Hollywood son
in the early morning light
this star fell down
on Sunset Boulevard

young and strong beautiful one
we embraced so close
is gone
was torn away

let the youth of America mourn
include him in their prayers
let his image linger on
repeat it everywhere

with candles, with flowers
he was one of ours
one of ours

why don’t you let him be?
he’s gone
we know
give his mother and his father peace
your vulture’s candor
your casual slander
you murder his memory
he’s gone
we know
it’s nothing but a tragedy
lay to rest your soul and body
lay beside your name
lay to rest your rage
your hunger and amazing grace

with candles, with flowers
you were one of ours
one of ours

I saw cameras expose your life
I heard rumors explode with lies
I saw children in tears
cry and crowd around the sight
of where you had collapsed that day
where your last breath and word
had been sighed
where your heart had burst
where you had died

I saw how they were lost in grieving
all half believing you were gone
the loss and pain of it
crime and shame of it
you were gone
it was such a nightmare raving,
“how could we save him from himself?”

That could sum up many but it was written for River. By Natalie, and I love to sing it. A few I have felt in this thread specifically , … JEFF BUCKLEY. His rendition of Leonard Cohens Hallelujah is beyond words, and Leonard Cohen is my favourite lyricist. RANDY RHOADES… my favourite guitarist of all time. Sublime… I tell you… the other day, when I was down and out, the song BADFISH… carried me through some bad feelings. What a fucking song. Cheers to this thread.

Prof reminded me of a line from “Bladerunner”:

“…The light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long…”

Also, Red Hot Chili Peppers, “Transcending”

You are my god you are my dog
You kept me close love never lost
I called you hippie you said fuck off
Said your brother?s a real punk rocker

Refrain :
Something gonna happen
Something very soon
Transcending flesh could be a breeze
Sending me oh over the Moon

Friends near death you gave respect
Sympathetic Intellect
Choices are, for one and all
All we are is, leaves that fall

Round and round inside your head
Smartest fucker I ever met
Vicious fish bit at your toes
Made you lie and numb your soul

Refrain

Mule donkey ass you bore the load
Of all creation?s tortured souls
Choices are for one and all
All is, leaves that fall

Hey gone to stay
Entire lifetime flash before me
In a loving stream
Hey mother may I have lost a child
But she gave birth
To a loving stream

Ooh, never know
When the gods will come and
Take you
To a loving stream
Ooh, heart of gold
The most special things you gave me were
From your loving stream

In a loving stream

Fuck the magazines
Fuck the green machine
See the human being
In a loving stream

Fuck the legal greed
Fuck the nothing scene
See the family
In a loving stream

God bless the Peppers, bless this thread.
