Classic Rock Fans

Q104.3 in NY played the top 1043 classic rock songs over Thanksgiving weekend. They came up with the list based on their listeners votes. I think the beatles had the most on the list at 79. Heres what they got as their top ten:

10-Rolling Stones
Sympathy For The Devil
9-Pink Floyd
Comfortably Numb
8-Eagles
Hotel California
7-Bruce Springsteen
Born To Run
6-Who
Won??t Get Fooled Again
5-Who
Baba O’riley
4-Beatles
Hey Jude
3-Lynyrd Skynyrd
Free Bird
2-Derek & The Dominos
Layla
1-Led Zeppelin
Stairway To Heaven

You can check out the whole list at : http://www.q1043.com/pages/top1043/2007.html

Pretty surprised Pearl Jam didn’t have an entry in the top 200. I would have thought Alive or Jeremy would have ranked top 50. But I guess it would depend on the demographic that listens to that station, which i’m guessing is fairly old. As great as the beatles are, calling Hey Jude a “Rock” song is a bit of a stretch.

Not the list I would make. Then again my tastes in music runs more towards the fun ideas of sexy women and gettin it on. More LOLA less LAYLA.

/ok maybe Lola isn’t the best example

I hate the Eagles. They’re worse than 3 dog night. They’re worse than Simon and Garfunkel. Ok. Maybe Simon and Garfunkel are worse. James Taylor sucks too. If you disagree with any of this, I refuse to believe you have any balls.

Pretty solid from an ‘all-time’ perspective, although I’d have to say WTF to #5. There’s gotta be a bunch better Who songs than that.

Really though, there are too many great all-time songs to make a bulletproof top 10. As far as the Eagles go, you might not like them, but you have to admit their influence on music history and their bankability. Both are up there with Floyd, Zep, and the Beatles, so for that you pretty much have to give them a spot.

And, I’d say that Pearl Jam is a bit too new to be considered “classic” rock. Heck, they were still putting songs out on radio as little as 5 years ago. They’re still semi current, although I agree those songs are awesome. I think I might be persuaded to put them in the “retro” category, but that’s about it. Need several more years before classic comes into play.

Blasphemy! How can you like classic rock and not like the Eagles?! Classic rock and the Eagles are synonymous to me. Ok, so maybe most of the Eagles tunes don’t do it for you, but can you honestly say that “Hotel California” is not a good song?

True but back then “pop” and “rock” were close members of an immediate family.

I frankly can’t stand the Beatles. Never have. Although from a nostalgic standpoint I tolerate their music from time to time.[/quote]

I agree. I could never stand them… much more of a Stones guy. Way more badass.

And Born to Run should have been number 1… just my two cents. I’m so goddamn tired of Zeppelin, 104.3 plays them every fifteen minutes.

I refuse to listen to 104.3 and have them taint Zep by playing the same 3 songs over and over.

Get the fucking Eagles and the Beatles off the list and replace them with Hendrix.

There are only about 4 songs in the Top 10 that are any good.

The Beatles suck ass. If Buddy Holly had lived another 10 years, you would have never heard of the Liverpool Asslicks.

Who decides this? Is it by radio plays or album sales? Not the list I would make either. Where’s Jimi Hendrix?

You can’t make a list unless everyone votes nationally and not to forget about Canada, GB and Aus. I don’t think it will happen. Even then we could have voter fraud, missing ballot boxes, it could get like the 2000 election. CCR fans bitter for years that they lost by a slight margin. Sore losers;^)

Zeppelin rulz but Stairway is played out.

The list is not supposed to be an “official list” just a cool thing they do ever year based on votes from their listeners.

Personally I don’t like the eagles that much either. (Ever seen the big lebowski? lol) Other then that, was anyone really suprised that stairway was number 1? And the bealtes are great idk wtf u guys are talking about =P I just wish billy joel was a little higher then 22 (I know i’m gonna get flamed for that. lol)

That was my initial interpretation as well. But then I noticed Metallica songs off their Black album were in the top 100, and it came out within a year or so of PJ Ten.

I think Classic rock is more of a genre, not just a time frame. Pearl Jam has a classic rock feel, they’re the Led Zepplin of the 90s. They just got lumped into the Grunge scene early just because they came out the same time as Nirvana. But they’re way more musically talented, and will certainly stand the test of time.

A strange coincidence that Paul McCartney now owns the publishing rights to most of Buddy Holly’s songs.

And I wouldn’t call the Beatles’ music classic rock and roll, either, except for their earliest numbers.

The definition of rock and roll will always evoke an individual, emotional response from people. That’s what “The Devil’s Music” is supposed to do. As long as the music is aggressive, driving and heavy on the bass, that’s rock and roll to me. Oh yeah, and it has to be real fuckin LOUD!

Word…unfortunately the Devil’s music has been bought up by big corporations…probably always has been…I don’t think you’ll see Pearl Jam on these lists in 10 - 20 years as they don’t play by the corporation rules…but of course the corporations control all the rules…so even by not playing by the rules, they’re playing by the rules…so to speak…

If you look at the lists from 10 years ago you’ll see all the same songs in the top 10…pretty much the top 100 also…funny that RUSH seems to be moved out of the top 100 when they were in the top 10 or 20 a few years ago with Tom Sawyer and Limelight always broke the top 100…I’m believing this is because they insist on putting out new music and not just playing the oldies for aging boomers…which confuses the corporations on how to make a buck off them…maybe I’m just pissed RUSH isn’t in the top 10.

AND FFS how could Big Bottoms by Spinal Tap not be top 10 material ! Three basses and one of them a double neck at that ! AND they go to 11…
