Died Too Soon?

Gillespie’s famous “bent” trumpet, now in the National Archives.

Originally was the result of an accident, but Dizzy loved the tone it created.

So he kept it throughout his career.

Question for you guys:

Without seeming too philosophical and/or religious, a lot of these peoples lives were FAR from being “wasted”.

Some made contributions that have Lived on long after their Deaths…

Thoughts?

I always figured it was often better to to burn bright and die young than be like so many older people I know who act like they only have sex in the missionary position and are afraid to ever even drive 5 miles over the speed limit for fear of losing their lives. They say you know you are old when the only thing you exercise is caution. I personally never want to get to that point.

I think people fear death because they lack any spiritual awareness and/or have very little accomplishment to show for their time spent here.

I met him (& Ozzy) backstage only months before he checked out…awesome technique…

I can’t say much about the stars I didn’t know, but it really sucks when it’s an average person that you did. There’s been a cluster of suicides in my town. 5-10 deaths since January; all around 16. I’m a little young to be having friends die on me. Fortunately none were that close. It’s hit some of my friends (that knew them well) really hard.

Not to take anything away from this thread, but I think you should add Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond to the list of people who’ve shaped jazz.

Charlie “Bird” Parker

Died at age 34

Along with Dizzy Gillespie and Theolonius Monk, and later expanded on by Miles Davis and John Coltrane, formed the Foundation of what we call “Jazz” today.

Peter Dixon (my dad)

Died age 35.

Is any musician list of “died too young” complete without Robert Johnson?

Check out archive.org

They have some excellent early Little Feat shows, and it’s free.

If we’re talking wasted talent, how about Earl “The Goat” Manigualt, the greatest basketball player never to play in the NBA. See the movie Rebound and thank me later…
